ROW FIVE RIPPER: Macedo Motors from Ninth for Wild River Cities Win

The Jason Johnson Racing crew collects their third win of the season in the latest River Cities thriller

GRAND FORKS, ND (May 29, 2026) - River Cities Speedway simply does not miss.

It’s tough to meet the hype when longtime World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series announcer Johnny Gibson calls the Grand Forks, ND bullring his favorite track of the more than 400 he’s visited. But River Cities continues to step up to the plate and knock it out of the park.

The Greatest Show on Dirt rolled into town Friday for the 1st Leg of the Northern Tour Don Mack Classic. A huge crowd packed the grandstands, and the fans the fans were not disappointed.

River Cities served up a wild 40-lapper with three different leaders and a late duel between two of the best in the world to decide it. Series rookie Kasey Jedrzejek led the way from the pole when the green flag dropped. He paced the opening 14 circuits before David Gravel took command on a Lap 15 restart. Cole Macedo surged into second and appeared poised to contend for his first career World of Outlaws win before tripping over the cushion and losing several spots. That gifted his brother Carson Macedo the runner-up spot and set up a wild closing segment.

Macedo closed his Jason Johnson Racing No. 41 right up on the tail tank of the Big Game Motorsports No. 2. A huge run allowed him to dive under Gravel for the lead down the front straightaway with four laps to go. Gravel answered with a slide job in Turns 3 and 4 the next time around but Macedo crossed him over. That proved to be the winning move as Macedo motored away to the checkered flag.

“Man, honestly that was just a Philip Dietz-race car right there,” Macedo said. “Every once in a while, you get one of those that’s just absolutely unbelievable. He killed it here tonight. I felt a little off in time trials then felt really good in the Heat Race. I felt like we made a lot of gains and were just a little stagnant because the track was a little faster. I felt like I was really good the whole Feature. The minute we fired off I was able to pick a few cars off. Then I just got kind of bungled up there in traffic to where I couldn’t make a move. I was trying to get by my brother and I think Balog for a long time. I couldn’t quite get clear of them. Once I did, I was able to move around and start plugging away nice laps. Man, that was awesome. My heart rate was through the roof.”

The career win total for Macedo climbs to 61 after Friday’s triumph. Three of those have come at River Cities, which ties him with Craig Dollansky for the second most at the quarter mile. He and the Jason Johnson Racing team are heating up with their second score in the last four races after just one in the first 21 nights of action this season. Macedo also regained sole possession of the second position in points.

David Gravel finished second to notch his Series-best 14th podium of 2026. His point lead is at 114 markers over Macedo.

Kasey Jedrzejek brought the Bill Rose Racing No. 6 home third for his first career World of Outlaws podium, and it happened to come at the track where Rose’s best Series finish is thanks to his third place run at River Cities back in 2011.

Chris Windom and Sheldon Haudenschild completed the top five.

NIGHTLY NOTES

Sheldon Haudenschild laid down his third Race//Ready Hottest Lap of the Night in the last four races.

David Gravel set his 10th Simpson Quick Time of the season in Honest Abe Roofing Qualifying.

Heat Races belonged to Andy Pake (NOS Energy Drink Heat One), Kasey Jedrzejek (TheGreatestStoreonDirt.com Heat Two), Bill Balog (WIX Filters Heat Three), and Sheldon Haudenschild (Golf Cart Services Heat Four).

The SPA Technique #1 Redraw went to Kasey Jedrzejek.

Jedrzejek also topped the Toyota Dash.

Spencer Bayston won the Micro-Lite Last Chance Showdown.

Chris Windom motored from 13th to fourth in the Sides Motorsports No. 7S to earn the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger.

Cole Macedo was the Tub O’ Towels Seventh Place Finisher.

Kasey Jedrzejek was the Five Star Bodies Rookie of the Race.

Jedrzejek also set the ACME Trading Company Fast Lap.

THE MONTH AHEAD: June Brings Major Northern Stretch, Final Nationals Tune-Up, Biggest Payday in Series History

Tyler Carr

CONCORD, NC (May 28, 2026) - June signals the start of summertime and a major month of racing for the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.

The Greatest Show on Dirt is set to embark on an 11-race stretch that’ll take the tour to six dirt tracks in four different states. Teams will make a popular return to a state after a hiatus, get one last chance to add notes for “The Granddaddy of ‘Em All,” battle for the biggest payday in Series history, and more along the way.

Let’s look at what awaits in June:

Hartford Speedway | Pure Michigan Showdown (June 5): June opens with the World of Outlaws making its first stop in the state of Michigan since 2019. Hartford Speedway is the destination. The 3/8 mile located not far from the southeast beaches of Lake Michigan has hosted the tour 11 previous times, with the first in 1979.

Ron Shuman topped the Series debut 47 years ago. The Series didn’t return until 1996 when Dave Blaney took Casey Luna’s No. 10 to Victory Lane. Two-time and defending champion, David Gravel, topped the two most recent visits – 2017 in the CJB Motorsports No. 5 and 2019 in the Jason Johnson Racing No. 41. Gravel and Steve Kinser (1996 and 2005) are the only pair with multiple Hartford checkered flags.

For tickets and more event information, CLICK HERE.

Plymouth Dirt Track | Cheese Town Showdown (June 6): It’s from one side of Lake Michigan to the other after Hartford as the tour wraps around it, heads through Chicago overnight, and winds up in Wisconsin, where Plymouth Dirt Track awaits. The World of Outlaws returned to “Cheese Town” last year after 20 years away and will be back again in 2026.

Last year’s return came down to a thrilling last lap when Rico Abreu held on for the win after contact with Michael “Buddy” Kofoid. Abreu became the third different winner through three races, following Joey Saldana (2004) and Tim Kaeding (2005).

For tickets and more event information, CLICK HERE.

Angell Park Speedway | Ted Johnson Memorial Race (June 7): Three races at three tracks in three nights wraps up on Sunday at the historic Angell Park Speedway. The legendary Wisconsin dirt track nestled right in the heart of Sun Prairie will welcome the World of Outlaws for the third time ever and honor the man whose vision birthed the Series, Ted Johnson, at the track where he fell in love with the sport.

Donny Schatz claimed the first Angell Park invasion in 2016. Fast forward nine years, and it was Sheldon Haudenschild heading to Victory Lane at the 1/3 mile.

For tickets and more event information, CLICK HERE.

Knoxville Raceway | Premier Chevy Dealers Clash (June 12-13): The pens and notebooks will be busy when the World of Outlaws make one final visit to Knoxville Raceway ahead of the 65th NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s (Aug. 12-15). A full weekend of action will attract a huge field as teams prepare to chase Sprint Car immortality two months later.

The tour has already made three stops at “The Sprint Car Capital of the World” this season. Brad Sweet and David Gravel snagged checkered flags during April’s leg of the Premier Chevy Dealers Clash. Aaron Reutzel dominated May’s Stars and Stripes Salute at the iconic 1/2 mile.

For tickets and more event information, CLICK HERE.

Huset’s Speedway | BillionAuto.com Huset’s High Bank Nationals (June 17-20): The summer of money starts in a huge way when the World of Outlaws head to Huset’s Speedway for the BillionAuto.com Huset’s High Bank Nationals. The Brandon, SD track continues to push the sport to new heights as the four-day visit is set to dish out a pair of six-figure paydays.

The two events packed into one begins with the Hefty Seed Huset’s Hustle on June 17-18. The Wednesday prelim will set the stage for a $150,000-to-win main event on Thursday. Then the focus shifts to the weekend and the record paying $300,000-to-win Huset’s High Bank Nationals finale. Buddy Kofoid swept the six-figure scores last year and topped the 2024 running. David Gravel was victorious in 2023, and Sheldon Haudenschild won the first running in 2022.

It was recently announced that the stakes are even higher for any driver that’s not full-time with the World of Outlaws. With Series regulars winning every running so far, Tod Quiring put up an extra $100,000 if a competitor can upset the country’s top Sprint Car talent in the finale, making for a potential $400,000 paycheck.

For tickets and more event information, CLICK HERE.

Cedar Lake Speedway | Federated Auto Parts Independence Spectacular (June 26-27): June closes out with the third race in the state of Wisconsin during the month. New Richmond, WI’s Cedar Lake Speedway is a summertime staple of the schedule, and the tradition continues as the tour visits for the 56th and 57th times. As always, fans will be treated to a huge fireworks show on the final night.

David Gravel and Carson Macedo were triumphant at last year’s Federated Auto Parts Independence Spectacular. Sammy Swindell and Brad Sweet are tied for the most Cedar Lake victories with seven apiece.

TOP FIVE STORYLINES: Rivers Cities, Nodak Return Bring World of Outlaws to Schatz’s Home Turf

TOP FIVE STORYLINES: Rivers Cities, Nodak Return Bring World of Outlaws to Schatz’s Home Turf

GRAND FORKS, ND (May 27, 2026) - North Dakota is ready to welcome The Greatest Show on Dirt for the first time in 2026 this weekend.

The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series will first visit Grand Forks’ River Cities Speedway on Friday, May 29, and then make its grand return to Minot’s Nodak Speedway.

River Cities has become a staple of the schedule since first appearing in 2007. The 1st Leg of the Northern Tour Don Mack Classic will be the tour’s 36th appearance. Longtime Series announcer Johnny Gibson calls River Cities his favorite track of the more than 400 he’s visited, thanks to the countless thrillers it’s served up over the years.

The teams will then take a day off before returning to action at Nodak for the Gerdau Metals Recycling Magic City Showdown. It’ll mark a popular return to the 3/8-mile dirt track after eight years away. Nodak has hosted the World of Outlaws 13 times in the past.

Let’s look at the top stories to watch in North Dakota:

10-TIME’S TURF

The journey to cementing himself as one of the greatest to ever wheel a Sprint Car began in North Dakota for Donny Schatz. Going to the races with his family as a kid lit a fiery passion that powered him to 10 World of Outlaws championships and countless more accolades. Any trip home to race is special for the Fargo, ND driver, and he’s always seemed to find a little extra speed for his local fanbase.

The numbers for Schatz at River Cities look like he’s playing a video game set to easy mode. He’s competed in all 35 Series races, bagged a dozen victories, placed on the podium 24 times, tallied 31 top fives, and never finished worse than eighth. His average finish over that stretch is an astonishing 2.94.

It’s a similar story over at Nodak for Schatz. It took the 48-year-old seven tries to best the World of Outlaws at the track in the town where he was born, but once he did, he couldn’t be stopped. His 2012 victory was the first of five consecutive wins at Nodak. He was also on the podium in the two most recent visits of 2017 and 2018.

Schatz heads home with the momentum of five consecutive top 10s in the CJB Motorsports No. 15, including top fives in the last two races. He’s tied with Sheldon Haudenschild for fourth in points during his 30th season.

BUDDY’S BROOM

Michael “Buddy” Kofoid broke out the broom last year at River Cities.

The Penngrove, CA native got it done from the front row in the spring, outdueling David Gravel to make his first visit to Victory Lane in Grand Forks, ND. Fast forward to August, and Kofoid put on a spectacular show with a drive from ninth to victory in the Roth Motorsports No. 83. He joined Donny Schatz and Craig Dollansky as the third competitor to top two in a row at the bullring.

Friday presents the chance to put his name next to only Schatz, who is the lone driver to win three straight at River Cities. The 24-year-old is fresh off banking $20,000 by charging from seventh to the front on Monday at Huset’s Speedway for his Series-leading sixth score of the season. That equaled him with Carson Macedo for second in the standings, but he’s still got some work to do to chase down David Gravel (+118 points) for the championship lead.

HAUD’S HUNT

If there was ever a track that owed a driver a win, it may be River Cities Speedway to Sheldon Haudenschild.

The Wooster, OH native has had one taken from him in just about every conceivable fashion. Crashes, late passes, and more have prevented Haudenschild from parking in Victory Lane at the 1/4 mile. He’s led laps in seven different Features and finished on the podium four times, including a trio of runner-ups.

Haudenschild will see if a new team can turn his fortune around on Friday. The 32-year-old is having an impressive first season with KCP Racing so far. They’ve collected a win, 11 top fives, and 16 top 10s through 24 races this year.

DAKOTA DOUBLE

Aside from Schatz, the only other full-time World of Outlaws driver to double up with wins at both River Cities and Nodak is two-time and defending Series champion, David Gravel. Former Series regulars Craig Dollanksy, Joey Saldana, and Daryn Pittman also pulled it off during their time on tour.

Gravel first conquered River Cities in 2017 with CJB Motorsports and did so again six years later with Big Game Motorsports. Gravel’s Nodak victory came during the same season he got his first at River Cities. The Watertown, CT native is amid another excellent campaign with a 4.96 average finish so far in 2026 as he chases a third straight title.

Three drivers – Logan Schuchart, Carson Macedo, and Buddy Kofoid – will have the opportunity to add their name to the list of those with victories at both facilities on the agenda. Schuchart snagged a pair of River Cities scores (2019 and 2023) in the Shark Racing No. 1S. He’s tried five times at Nodak with a best of fourth in 2016. Macedo and Kofoid also have two River Cities trophies, but they’ll both be making their Nodak debuts.

NOSA NAMES

With North Dakota being a mainstay of the World of Outlaws tour, many locals look forward to the opportunity to battle the best on a big stage. Expect this weekend to be no different.

Donny Schatz’s nieces, Amelia and Laela Eisenschenk, made their World of Outlaws debuts last year and will be back for more this weekend aboard their uncle’s cars. Both have accumulated plenty of laps at River Cities over the last couple of years with several top 10s to show for it. They each raced at Nodak earlier this month with NOSA. Amelia finished fifth with Laela close behind in seventh.

Grand Forks, ND’s own Mark Dobmeier has been winning at River Cities since the turn of the century to the tune of more than 150 victories at his home track. A piece lacking from that résumé is one with the World of Outlaws, but he’s been close with six top fives, including a pair of podiums. Over at Nodak, he’s won five times with NOSA and was a World of Outlaws top-five finisher in 2010.

Fellow Grand Forks resident, Jade Hastings, has asserted himself as one of the best currently at River Cities. He claimed half of the track’s 12 NOSA events in 2025 and already won there again this year last week.

Fans can anticipate additional regulars from the region, including Jack Croaker (East Grand Forks, MN), Weston Olson (Warren, MN), Blake Egeland (Climax, MN), Nick and Zach Omdahl (East Grand Forks, MN), and more.

TOP FIVE STORYLINES: Jacksonville, New Look Memorial Day Weekend Ahead for World of Outlaws

tyler carr

JACKSONVILLE, IL (May 19, 2026) - A big Midwestern week awaits the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.

Three races. Three tracks. Three states. Four days.

First up, the Series sets course for a midweek battle in Illinois at Jacksonville Speedway for the Hy-Vee Perks 40 on Thursday, May 21.

Then, a freshened Memorial Day weekend trip takes center stage as the Stars and Stripes Salute sends The Greatest Show on Dirt to a pair of the country’s most famed facilities. First up is Iowa’s Knoxville Raceway on Saturday, May 23. Then comes the first visit of 2026 to Brandon, SD’s Huset’s Speedway on Sunday, May 24. Both nights will send the winner home with $20,000.

Let’s look at the top stories to watch this week:

BULLRING BOYS

Only two current full-time Series competitors have been able to conquer a Jacksonville World of Outlaws race.

The first was Lemoore, CA’s Carson Macedo. He topped the 2019 visit in the Kyle Larson Racing No. 2 but is still after one with his current Jason Johnson Racing team. Together, they’ve collected finishes of fourth, fourth, and third at Jacksonville.

David Gravel emerged victorious from the 2024 race of the year at Jacksonville after a race-long war for the top spot. Since climbing aboard the Big Game Motorsports No. 2, the Watertown, CT native hasn’t been outside the top five at Jacksonville in three tries.

While Macedo and Gravel may be the only two with World of Outlaws scores at Jacksonville, they’re not the only two full-timers to have won at the 1/4 mile in some fashion. Both Michael “Buddy” Kofoid and Spencer Bayston have visited Victory Lane in POWRi Midget action.

CONQUERING THE CAPITAL

Knoxville Raceway is unanimously viewed as one of the toughest tracks to learn in the sport, but David Gravel and his Big Game Motorsports team have something figured out.

Gravel has made 25 Feature starts at Knoxville in the Cody Jacobs-wrenched car and finished on the podium 14 times, including his last four appearances. The two-time and defending champion enters the week as the most recent Series winner in Knoxville, IA, thanks to topping the finale of the Premier Chevy Dealers Clash opening leg last month. “The Sprint Car Capital of the World” always brings a stacked field, and Gravel almost always rises to the occasion.

The 33-year-old heads into the trio of races amid somewhat of a slump by his standards. Gravel finished 11th from 22nd on Friday before moving from 11th to sixth Saturday at Eldora. You don’t often see the No. 2 outside the top five in consecutive races these days, and Gravel is sure to be hungry to get back up front where he’s grown accustomed to competing.

BUDDY AND BILL’S BANK

There is no driver and team combination looking forward to getting back to Huset’s Sunday more than Buddy Kofoid and Roth Motorsports.

After suffering through the lowest of lows at the 2023 BillionAuto.com Huset’s High Bank Nationals, they’ve risen to the highest of highs. Huset’s has hosted a trio of six-figure payday races since then, and Kofoid and the No. 83 crew won all of them. They also added a $25,000 score at last fall’s Huset’s Shootout for good measure. The South Dakota oval might as well be Kofoid’s personal bank. He’s been on the podium in 10 of his last 13 races there, including a current streak of six in a row. Kofoid enters this week needing a boost with two results outside the top 10 in the last three races this season.

He may have not made as big of a withdrawal as Kofoid, but Bill Balog had a lucrative week of his own last summer at Huset’s. The “North Pole Nightmare” collected a win, a pair of runner-ups, and a seventh during the High Bank Nationals. Add it all up, and he wound up with a nearly $100,000 trip. Balog hasn’t finished outside the top 10 in his eight most recent Huset’s races. The 46-year-old is still after his first checkered flag of 2026.

NEW LOOK, NEW KNOWLEDGE

There’s no doubt that the World of Outlaws teams are grateful for the new look Memorial Day weekend. Not only does it present the chance to chase a pair of $20,000 paydays, but the Stars and Stripes Salute also gives teams extra laps at two of the most important tracks on the schedule.

Hands will be furiously taking notes this weekend at Knoxville and Huset’s. The two ovals are home to some of the most prestigious events on the calendar. Knoxville is the site of the NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s (Aug. 12-15). It’s the race atop every Sprint Car driver’s bucket list and is set to pay a record $200,000 to the champion at the top of the most generous purse in the sport that awards $15,000 for just making the show. Huset’s is upping the ante once again with the BillionAuto.com Huset’s High Bank Nationals (June 17-20). The four nights pack two events into one with the Hefty Seed Huset’s Hustle (June 17-18) handing out $150,000 to the winner. Then teams will contend for the highest winner’s share in World of Outlaws history ($300,000) to wrap up High Bank Nationals week on June 19-20.

This weekend is an extra night at both tracks that teams aren’t accustomed to having, and you can never get enough laps at the dirt ovals that serve up life-changing money and legacy-cementing opportunities. If a team wants to try something outside the box, the Stars and Stripes Salute may be the time to do so.

FLYIN’ RYAN

Among the region’s regulars to watch over the weekend at Knoxville and Huset’s, there’s no doubt that Ryan Timms stands out as a favorite to contend for victory.

The Oklahoma City, OK native put the Liebig Motorsports No. 10 on the podium both nights of April’s portion of the Premier Chevy Dealers Clash with the World of Outlaws. Timms then won the track’s first weekly program and came home runner-up the following week. And of course, he’s the defending Knoxville Nationals champion. The combination of Timms and Liebig may have cemented themselves as the crew to beat at the Marion County Fairgrounds.

Timms was also poised to win the Huset’s season opener on May 10 before an incident while leading in lapped traffic. The 19-year-old won six times at the Brandon, SD oval last year on the way to the track title.

While Timms may stand out, he’s far from the only regular to keep an eye on over the weekend. Names like Austin McCarl (Altoona, IA), Kaleb Johnson (Sioux Falls, SD), Brian Brown (Higginsville, MO), Kelby Watt (Adel, IA), Christopher Thram (Sanborn, MN), and plenty more are also expected to be in action.

BY THE NUMBERS: Eldora’s World of Outlaws History

trent glover

ROSSBURG, OH (May 14, 2026) - The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series and Eldora Speedway go way back.

The two have been connected since Earl Baltes welcomed Ted Johnson’s band of travelers for the tour’s second race ever. At the time, nobody knew that the foundations of The Greatest Show on Dirt were forming, but Baltes saw promise in Johnson’s plan to organize the country’s best Sprint Car drivers.

That race on April 16, 1978 was the beginning of a long and fruitful connection between the World of Outlaws and the “Big E.” The iconic 1/2 mile has been a mainstay on the schedule ever since. From Baltes’ continued growth of the track to Tony Stewart pushing it to new heights over the last couple decades, the World of Outlaws remained a fixture.

The longstanding tradition between the tour and track continues this Friday-Saturday, May 15-16 with #LetsRaceTwo presented by LGMG. The weekend brings worlds together as the World of Outlaws meet up with the USAC National Sprint Cars on the high banks of Eldora for two nights of a Sprint Car fan’s dream.

The World of Outlaws will be back at Eldora on July 17-18 for the 43rd running of the Kings Royal with $200,000 going in the champion’s bank.

Let’s look at the World of Outlaws and Eldora’s history by the numbers:

242 – the number of World of Outlaws races contested at Eldora Speedway. It’s one of only three tracks to host at least 200 nights and trails Williams Grove Speedway by just one for the most visited track in World of Outlaws history.

51 – the number of drivers that have won a World of Outlaws race at Eldora.

47 – the number of seasons the World of Outlaws have visited Eldora. That’s all but one in the history of the Series. The only reason for no perfect attendance is the pandemic prevented a 2020 trip.

41 – the number of World of Outlaws wins at Eldora Steve Kinser collected in his legendary career. It’s only fitting that Eldora sits tied alongside Knoxville Raceway at the top of the list where “The King” won most often in his career.

11 – the number of World of Outlaws races at Eldora in 1980, the most the tour has visited the “House that Earl Built” in a single season.

Ashton Torgerson Heads to Three Stooges Racing for Remainder of World of Outlaws Rookie Campaign

Tyler carr

CONCORD, NC (May 12, 2026) - Ashton Torgerson is joining forces with Three Stooges Racing to complete his rookie World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series season.

The 19-year-old began the year aboard the Shark Racing No. 1A. Their 17 races together in 2026 yielded four top 10s including a runner-up at Volusia Speedway Park. The Shark team opted to park the car for an unspecified amount of time, leaving Torgerson seeking an avenue to continue the campaign. Even though things didn’t end how Torgerson may have preferred, the rising racer is grateful for the opportunity they provided.

“Before Bobby (Allen) and Jacob gave me the shot in the 1A, I was just doing Midgets and Micro stuff,” Torgerson said. “I really didn’t have Sprint Car experience, just a little bit of 360 stuff in California. 410 stuff, they were really my first option, and they gave me a shot. I can’t thank them enough for giving me that opportunity.”

He found a short-term solution with Moody Motorsports over the weekend at Williams Grove Speedway. The Glendale, AZ native finished an impressive eighth in the HVAC Distributors Morgan Cup finale during only his second night in the No. 99M. He now trails Emerson Axsom by only 24 markers in the battle for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year presented by Five Star Bodies.

“I’ve got to thank Kyle Moody and Moody Motorsports for giving me the opportunity to drive their car to finish out Williams Grove and get me through the weekend,” Torgerson said. “Without them, I wouldn’t be able to still be in the rookie race.”

The seat of the Three Stooges Racing No. 51 opened after Williams Grove when the team and Scott Bogucki parted ways. The pairing tallied a podium and three top 10s through the first 19 races this year.

“I’m excited to be teaming up with Three Stooges Racing and start it off with a few races,” Torgerson said. “We’ll be at Attica then get started with the World of Outlaws at Eldora and keep that rookie race alive.”

Torgerson continues his debut World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car campaign in the Three Stooges Racing No. 51 this weekend (May 15-16) at Eldora Speedway’s #LetsRaceTwo presented by LGMG. For tickets, CLICK HERE.

ROSSBURG, OH (May 12, 2026) - Another historic venue awaits the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.

Amid a month of May that features several of the sport’s most famed tracks, Rossburg, OH’s Eldora Speedway is next on the agenda for The Greatest Show on Dirt.

Let’s look at the top stories to watch at Eldora:

BUCKEYES AT THE BIG E

After Mother Nature intervened at Attica Raceway Park and Sharon Speedway to start the month, a pair of World of Outlaws competitors will enjoy their first chance to race on home turf this weekend.

Wooster, OH’s Sheldon Haudenschild has one of the most passionate group of local followers that are ready to welcome him home. He’s won twice before at Eldora, and they’ve both come during #LetsRaceTwo weekend (2021 and 2024). Haudenschild and the KCP Racing crew are fresh off a pair of top five efforts at Williams Grove heading to Haudenschild’s home state.

Lagrange, OH’s Kasey Jedrzejek is set for his first time racing at home as a competitor with the World of Outlaws. He’s made 11 previous appearances at Eldora in his young career. The highlight of those is undoubtedly when he put the Ed Neumeister No. 11N on the pole of last year’s Kings Royal. The 21-year-old’s rookie campaign with Bill Rose Racing brought two top 10s so far.

ELDORA EXCELLENCE

Beyond Haudenschild, the 2026 World of Outlaws roster features several drivers that know the route to Eldora Victory Lane.

Donny Schatz stands atop the list with a whopping 19 Eldora trophies in his collection. Among those are six Kings Royal crowns (second most all-time), the 2002 Historical Big One, and six World of Outlaws scores during #LetsRaceTwo weekend. Schatz and CJB Motorsports slipped to fifth in points over the week in Pennsylvania.

David Gravel is one win away from reaching double digits at the iconic 1/2 mile. Six of his nine victories have come since joining Big Game Motorsports in 2021. He’s topped a #LetsRaceTwo Feature in each of the last two seasons. Gravel enters the weekend atop the standings with an 88-point advantage.

Chris Windom has never won at Eldora with wings, but the former USAC standout has done so plenty without a lid. His résumé boasts eight victories spread across Silver Crown, Sprint Cars, and Midgets.

No track has been kinder to Logan Schuchart and Shark Racing than Eldora. They’ve won together six times at the Ohio oval. The highlight was banking the biggest payday in the sport’s history at the 2023 Eldora Million.

Carson Macedo and Jason Johnson Racing have topped a trio of Eldora races together. They’ve all come during Kings Royal week, so they’ll look to add one during the month of May this time around.

The two “Hoosiers” on tour – Spencer Bayston (Lebanon, IN) and Emerson Axsom (Franklin, IN) – have both claimed one checkered flag from Eldora. Bayston’s came with USAC in a Midget (2017) while Axsom beat ASCoC last year in the Klaasmeyer/Petry Motorsports No. 27.

BILL’S BOUNCING BACK

It’s been a trying couple weeks for Bill Balog, but this past weekend gave him reason to be confident moving forward.

With more than 40 cars in the pits both nights including the country’s toughest local competition at Williams Grove, the “North Pole Nightmare” brought the No. 17B home ninth on Friday and 10th on Saturday. It’s the first time Balog posted consecutive top 10s since early March. Currently, Balog sits 11th in driver points and eighth in team points.

It’s been a mixed bag of results for Balog at Eldora. He bagged a top five in the 2021 Kings Royal and finished sixth later that year at the 4-Crown Nationals. He had struggled a bit since then before coming home sixth in a Double Down Duels prelim last year.

DOUBLE DUTY

At least two drivers will showcase their versatility by running with both the World of Outlaws and USAC.

Brady Bacon will be aboard the TKH Motorsports No. 21H with wing wings and the CD Racing No. 20 without wings. The “Macho Man” has always had speed at Eldora to the tune of USAC wins in both the Sprint Car and Silver Crown divisions along with one with ASCoC.

Joining Bacon in the double duty effort will be Sutter, CA’s Logan Seavey. The CB Industries/Spire Motorsports No. 87 will be his ride with the World of Outlaws, and he’ll be in the Abacus Racing No. 57 with USAC. Seavey owns five Eldora victories spread across USAC’s three premier divisions – three with Silver Crown and one apiece with Sprint Cars and Midgets. His best winged effort there is 11th in 2022 with ASCoC.

QUEST FOR A CROWN

With Eldora’s 43rd Kings Royal only two months away and offering a massive $200,000 in riches to the winner, many more teams will invade the “Big E” this weekend to add some pages to the notebook.

St. Helena, CA’s Rico Abreu is a 13-time Eldora Feature winner including five with the World of Outlaws. He and the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing No. 24 team have #LetsRaceTwo on their calendar.

Tyler Courtney recently grabbed a World of Outlaws win at Tri-State Speedway, and he’ll be back with The Greatest Show on Dirt this weekend. He’s also won 13 times at Eldora in a variety of vehicles. “Sunshine’s” first career World of Outlaws score came at the 2021 Kings Royal.

It’s also worth noting the Chase Briscoe No. 5B plans to be in action with Karter Sarff behind the wheel. The NASCAR Cup Series star for Joe Gibbs racing recently brought his Sprint Car program back to life. It’ll mark Sarff’s Eldora debut.

Additional competitors expected to be in action include Giovanni Scelzi (Fresno, CA), Tanner Holmes (Jacksonville, OR), Parker Price-Miller (Kokomo, IN), and more.

TOP FIVE STORYLINES: World of Outlaws, PA Posse Rivalry Renewed with Three Battles

tyler carr

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA (May 4, 2026) - The next chapter of Sprint Car racing’s fiercest rivalry is ready to be written.

On one side, you’ve got the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series. The tour is home to the nation’s top traveling talent that ventures coast to coast hitting dirt tracks all over through the year. They’re the best of the best and have been since Ted Johnson cultivated the idea to bring them all together in 1978.

On the other side, you’ve got the Pennsylvania Posse. The “Keystone State” has long been home to the sport’s toughest weekly competition. As a result, the locals take great pride in defending the porch when the World of Outlaws come to town.

It all starts on Tuesday, May 5 at Abbottstown, PA’s Lincoln Speedway when the Gettysburg Clash brings the opening battle. The track nestled in the scenic Pigeon Hills will welcome the tour for the 57th time.

Then it’s over to Mechanicsburg, PA’s Williams Grove Speedway on Friday-Saturday, May 8-9 for the HVAC Distributors Morgan Cup. The two-night event puts $15,000 up for grabs in the finale and possession of the coveted Cup and the bragging rights that come with it.

In addition to the racing, fans can attend the Hershey Sprint Car Experience at Hersheypark Stadium on Thursday, May 7. The event is open to the public from 5-7pm ET and celebrates the region’s rich racing history while allowing fans to meet their favorite drivers from both the World of Outlaws and PA Posse.

The stage is set. It’s time to renew the rivalry.

Let’s check out the top stories to watch in Pennsylvania:

THE POSSE PREVAILED

The locals own bragging rights entering this week.

The two sides faced off six times in 2025, and the Posse claimed four. Anthony Macri was largely responsible for the PA supremacy. It began with him winning the Morgan Cup. He followed that with a Bricker’s Bash triumph at BAPS Motor Speedway. Lastly, the Dillsburg, PA native won at Lincoln in October. The fourth score came courtesy of York, PA’s Chase Dietz, who bagged his first career World of Outlaws win in the National Open prelim.

While the Posse had the higher quantity, the World of Outlaws did snatch the state’s most prestigious race. Sheldon Haudenschild walked out of Williams Grove a National Open champion and $75,000 richer last October. The one other victory for the travelers was Michael “Buddy” Kofoid and Roth Motorsports topping Lincoln’s Gettysburg Clash.

This week serves up the first three of eight scheduled faceoffs between the World of Outlaws and PA Posse in 2026.

GREATNESS AT THE GROVE

There are two current World of Outlaws competitors who’ve won more at Williams Grove than anywhere else, and it happens to be the pair of champions.

Donny Schatz has broken the heart of Pennsylvanians at “The Grove” for decades. He first conquered the 1/2 mile in 2000 and his since topped 20 more. Among those are a record six National Open titles. His 21 World of Outlaws victories at Williams Grove rank second behind only Steve Kinser’s eye-popping 38. Schatz heads to Pennsylvania amid a consistent stretch with his CJB Motorsports team, posting top 10s in 10 of the last 11 races.

David Gravel’s nine Williams Grove checkered flags puts it atop the list of the 58 different tracks he’s won at. The defending champion has always had speed in Mechanicsburg, PA no matter the car he’s in. Those nine trophies are split up among Roth Motorsports, CJB Motorsports, Jason Johnson Racing, and his current home – Big Game Motorsports. A 10th win this weekend would make him the sixth to reach double digits.

OUTLAWS ON THE HUNT

Schatz and Gravel won’t be the only World of Outlaws competitors the Posse have to deal with if they want to protect the porch.

Carson Macedo boasts multiple wins at both tracks on the agenda. The Lemoore, CA native beat the All Star Circuit of Champions (ASCoC) at Lincoln in 2018 aboard Joe Gaerte’s No. 3G. Two years later, he won a local Lincoln show in Kyle Larson Racing’s No. 2. Williams Grove has welcomed Macedo to Victory Lane on four occasions. The last three have come since teaming with Jason Johnson Racing.

Sheldon Haudenschild is also a winner at both Lincoln and Willams Grove. His lone Lincoln score came in the 2020 Gettysburg Clash. The Wooster, OH native owns a pair of Williams Grove trophies including last year’s National Open title.

Buddy Kofoid is on the list of those who’ve come out on top at the pair of PA facilities ahead. He claimed Lincoln’s Weldon Sterner Memorial in 2022 before snagging last year’s Gettysburg Clash in the Roth Motorsports No. 83. The 2024 National Open prelim supplied his lone Williams Grove win.

A pair of current World of Outlaws drivers tamed Williams Grove without wings. Both Chris Windom and Emerson Axsom have USAC National Sprint Car victories at the 1/2 mile.

FOR SCRUFFY

Last fall, the sport was dealt a devastating blow when Bobby Allen passed away. But the Shark Racing team he constructed continues to embody “Scruffy’s” never give up approach that led him to becoming a legend of Sprint Car racing.

Logan Schuchart races on in his grandfather’s honor and would love to get a win in his home state for his “pappy.” The Hanover, PA native topped a pair of Lincoln races in 2013 during his days of racing locally. Over at Williams Grove, he’s won four times including the 2023 Morgan Cup.

Ashton Torgerson now pilots the blue No. 1A that Allen made famous. The Glendale, AZ driver has done nothing but impress since getting the opportunity last spring. His best Lincoln result is a runner-up last August. A pair of top 10s highlight his Williams Grove experience.

POSSE POWER

Pennsylvania is ready to send plenty of capable locals into battle with hopes of defending home turf.

It’s tough to begin any conversation about Posse favorites without first mentioning Lance Dewease. The Fayetteville, PA legend already topped Williams Grove’s opener in the Eichelberger No. 8, his 117th win at the paperclip-shaped track. Dewease owns 20 World of Outlaws victories in his career, and 17 have come at “The Grove.” He also beat The Greatest Show on Dirt at Lincoln in 2019.

The man who has cemented himself as one of the Posse’s current top forces is Chase Dietz. The York, PA driver has already won a nation-leading six times in 2026, four at Lincoln and two at BAPS. Dietz hasn’t finished outside the top two in his last seven starts aboard the Stehman Motorsports No. 23D.

Danny Dietrich is always one to watch in the “Keystone State.” He’s fifth on Lincoln’s all-time win list with 67 victories including a pair with the World of Outlaws (2012 & 2013). The Gettysburg, PA driver owns 34 Williams Grove wins, most notably the 2016 National Open.

Hanover, PA’s Troy Wagaman Jr. continues to assert himself among the best the Posse currently have to offer. Since late 2022, he’s won 15 times in Pennsylvania including six at Lincoln and five at Williams Grove.

Anthony Macri may be sidelined by an injury, but the Macri Motorsports No. 39M will still be in action with Kasey Kahne behind the wheel. He may hail from Enumclaw, WA, roughly 2,700 miles from central Pennsylvania, but there’s no doubt the Posse fans will claim him if he performs well aboard Macri’s machine.

Additional locals expected to compete this week include Freddie Rahmer (Salfordville, PA), Tyler Ross (Lincoln University, PA), T.J. Stutts (Liverpool, PA), Dylan Norris (Hanover, PA), Ryan Smith (Kunkletown, PA), Cameron Smith (Spring Grove, PA), and more.

Skylar Gee Teams with Greg Wheeler Motorsports for Duration of 2026 World of Outlaws Season

tyler carr

CONCORD, NC (May 1, 2026) - Skylar Gee has joined forces with Greg Wheeler Motorsports for the remainder of the 2026 World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series season.

The move comes after Wheeler and Scotty Thiel parted ways following the Premier Chevy Dealers Clash at Knoxville Raceway. Thiel’s best run aboard Wheeler’s No. 16C through 16 races this year was 11th at Volusia Speedway Park in March.

Gee returns to The Greatest Show on Dirt after completing his rookie campaign in 2025. The Leduc, AB, Canada driver tallied a pair of top fives and nine top 10s last season in the Logan Fenton Racing No. 99.

“I’ve known Greg for quite a while,” Gee said. “We actually used to have the same engine builder one time and were always chatting at the races. He’s one of the nicest guys in the pit area, and I always enjoy talking to him. I saw the news where him and Scotty parted ways, so I thought I’d reach out and see if he was interested in staying on tour and finishing the year out and going back racing. I jumped at the opportunity, and here we are.

“I’m really excited. Greg has some of the best equipment. I knew it was a great opportunity and everything. His shop only being an hour away from my house was huge too. I’m going to get to be home quite often and get to the shop a lot. I’ve worked really hard to get back to this spot and get back to racing with the Outlaws.”

The first appearances for Gee with Greg Wheeler Motorsports will come next week during a three-race trip to Pennsylvania with stops at Lincoln Speedway (May 5) and Williams Grove Speedway (May 8-9). For tickets, CLICK HERE.

Meet One of the Pit Area’s Most Positive Personalities, Jimmy Fitzwater

tyler carr

CONCORD, NC (May 1, 2026) - Life as a crew member with a World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series team is far from glamorous.

Sure, it’s a job many would love to have, but that doesn’t make the late nights and early mornings easy. Parking lot maintenance all through the summer, and often far from home. Quarter car wash trips beyond midnight. Long trips from track to track. It may be an occupation many aspire to have, but it doesn’t mean they’re all cut out for it. It’s easy to get worn down by the grind.

But Bill Rose Racing’s Jimmy Fitzwater refuses to have a bad day on the road. You won’t ever find him upset at the track. You’ll find a man who is always happy to be doing what he loves as he helps Kasey Jedrzejek navigate his first season on tour.

A military family meant Fitzwater moved often in his youth. He wound up in Georgia, and southern dirt tracks initially attracted him to Late Models. Eventually, Ohio became home and introduced him to Sprint Cars. The look. The sound. The racing. Fitzwater fell in love.

“I’d always wanted to work on them, always had a fascination with them. They’re the meanest machines on dirt,” Fitzwater said. “Seeing the big wing on top as a kid, I was like, ‘Wow.’”

Fitzwater got his shot to work on one when one of the “Buckeye State’s” most famed families needed a hand.

“In 2014, Lee Jacobs reached out to me over Facebook and said, ‘Hey, who wants to work on Sprint Cars?’” Fitzwater recalled. “And then ever since then it’s been full send.”

That stint even allowed Fitzwater to work with Cody Jacobs, who now turns the wrenches on the Big Game Motorsports No. 2 that David Gravel has driven to two consecutive championships.

Fitzwater moved around to various local teams over the next several seasons, soaking up as much knowledge as he could. One of those stops was Bryan Grove’s No. 28 with Tim Shaffer behind the wheel. Shaffer’s friendship with Jason Sides got Fitzwater acquainted with the 2003 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year presented by Five Star Bodies and opened the door for him to hit the road.

“Tim Shaffer and Jason Sides are pretty good friends,” Fitzwater said. “They asked me if I wanted to go to Florida, and I said yes. I got to work with Jason for the first time in 2021.”

That audition led to Fitzwater joining the Sides Motorsports crew full-time in 2022 and spending a few seasons with them as Sides stepped back from driving to operate as the crew chief on the No. 7S. Fitzwater worked with Robbie Price, Landon Crawley, and Chris Windom in his time with the team. Different drivers and different personalities, but Fitzwater enjoyed his time with each equally.

“Each driver has their unique characteristics and little quirks they do,” Fitzwater said. “I’ve never had a bad time with any driver I’ve worked with. Chris always said I was like Mr. Positive and never had a bad day.”

During the stretch with Sides, Fitzwater’s attitude was recognized with the Jason Johnson Sportsmanship Award in 2024.

Fitzwater’s career path brought him to Bill Rose’s operation for 2026 as they hired Kasey Jedrzejek to make a rookie run with The Greatest Show on Dirt. It hasn’t taken long for Fitzwater’s positivity to make an impact on the entire group.

“That means a lot because you’ve got to have fun doing this crap,” Rose said of Fitzwater’s personality. “I’ve told everybody, even Kasey getting into this deal, we got to have fun. If you’re not having fun, you got to do something different. He (Fitzwater) brings that to it. He likes to have a good time, and everybody knows that’s part of it… He does what he does, and he’s been doing really well.”

“It’s been a lot of fun working with Jimmy,” Jedrzejek echoed. “He’s never down or anything. He’s always there to have a good time, and I think he does a really good job at keeping everybody going if we’re having a bad day or something is just not going right. It just doesn’t affect Jimmy. He’s still having a good time and moving forward with the rest of the day."

Fitzwater himself is enjoying this year just like all the others. Jedrzejek is showing promise with a pair of top 10s already this season, competing against the world’s best Sprint Car drivers every night. But whether they run up front, struggle, or the race rains out, Fitzwater’s disposition remains the same. You can catch him enjoying every moment of the ride in the pit area each week. And if Mother Nature permits a little playtime, you might even find him wowing patrons of a local beverage establishment with his unparalleled dance moves.

“If you’re having a bad time, I’m always down to crack a joke or make you smile a little bit and make the day a little better,” Fitzwater said. “I mean, we’re all out here for a long period of time. It gets hot and sticky and smelly and greasy. If I can make you smile a little bit, I feel like I did my job for the day.”

Jedrzejek, Fitzwater, and the Bill Rose Racing team continue the 2026 World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car season next week in Pennsylvania at Lincoln Speedway on Tuesday, May 5 and Williams Grove Speedway on Friday-Saturday, May 8-9. For tickets, CLICK HERE.

Kyler Johnson Finds Strength Through Adversity in First Quarter of ASCS Campaign

Emily Schwanke

CONCORD, NC (May 29, 2026) — Kyler Johnson is currently sitting at the highest he’s ever been in the points standings with the American Sprint Car Series. But he knows he could still be higher.

While Quinter, KS native has seen glimpses of race-winning pace in the first quarter of the season, placing him fourth in the standings (126 points back from the lead), issues beyond his control have kept him from being closer to the fight for the top.

Before joining the national-touring 360 Sprint Cars in May at Benton Speedway, Johnson took part in the ASCS Gunsmoke Region opener at Dodge City Raceway Park. While leading the night’s Feature, he lost power in his car and left the night with a DNF.

The gremlins persisted at Benton, with Johnson not completing a lap at speed in any of the night’s program. It took until after the Feature was contested for the team to discover the real issue.

“The weekend before (Benton), we were running the regional race out at Dodge City,” Johnson said. “We were leading the Feature, then all of a sudden, we just lost power. So, we tore into it and changed what we originally thought was the problem. The car would idle just fine, but it just couldn’t get up to speed.

“So, we go out to Benton, and obviously don’t run at all. It wasn’t until after the Feature ended that we decided to check our barrel valve. What ended up happening was that we had an O-ring come apart in the fuel pump, and that went through the barrel valve and just got it loosened off enough to where it wouldn’t run.”

The night at Benton was not the first time in 2026 that Johnson had his back to the wall with the ASCS National Tour. On the second night of Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals, his primary Sprint Car was totaled after a crash during his Heat race.

Throughout the year, Johnson has utilized new shocks on his No. 45X Maxim Chassis, courtesy of J1S7 Suspension, which is owned by 2024 NARC King of the West Sprint Car champion Justin Sanders. Though he’s taken time to gain comfort with the new suspension components, Johnson described the change as an overall positive.

“We had a whole new shock package to start the season,” Johnson said. “We switched to Justin Sanders, and we were doing some of the stuff we had done before in our career to start getting an idea of what we were dealing with. I talked to Justin (at Volusia), and we took a big swing at something we never did before, and we had really good speed to battle with (Cole) Macedo and Hank (Davis).

“With Justin, our whole notebook is basically thrown out the window, outside of our gearing. Any other notes as far as setup goes is out the window. This whole season is basically all about starting fresh. We really like the balance of what we’ve got. We were able to adjust it a little bit and tweak it for what we need at the track. We’ve been working together a lot in the last couple of months and really finding speed.”

Johnson’s first race after the mishap at Benton was a Memorial Day visit to Phillips County Raceway with the ASCS Western Plains and Gunsmoke Regions. From start to finish, the 22-year-old had his car at the top of the leaderboard with Quick Time in Qualifying, a Heat win, and then led all 20 laps of the Feature for his first win of the year.

“Any chance you get a win, it will always add confidence to the whole program,” Johnson said. “Really, it was just a big relief to get out there, get on the gas, and it actually ran. We thought we had fixed it two weeks ago, and that obviously wasn’t the case. We had the problem fixed, and it was just good to show speed in every stage of the night.

“We feel like all year, our biggest weakness has been the Heat races. It feels like we can get out there and qualify really good, then we don’t make enough of an adjustment for the Heat race. So, it seems like we’re just good enough to make the Dash. Going Quick Time, you have to start fourth, and you have to finish there or better. We’ve lacked the Heat Race speed this year, but we took a bigger swing for the Heat race, so we were not having to make as big a swing for the Feature.”

Securing a Feature win in regional competition, Johnson’s next battle with the American Sprint Car Series will come in a two-track weekend, starting with Oklahoma’s Creek County Speedway, then a home state visit to 81 Speedway.

Though he’s only finished in the top-10 once at Creek County in 2023, Johnson has seen career heights at the 3/8-mile in Park City, KS. His first win at 81 came with POWRi in 2020, scored his first career ASCS podium in 2023, and finished eighth in the Series’ latest visit. In 2026, he’s seeking the dual state challenge to mark his first career National Tour win.

“Anytime we go to a big 3/8-mile or a 1/2-mile, you know it’s going to be slick and sandy,” Johnson said. “I definitely feel like that’s where I thrive because I grew up racing on this Kansas sandy soil, and you don’t have a lot of grip. Justin got us special shocks, and that’s the main reason we went out to (Phillips County) was to test them, and we really liked them.

“We’ve been so close (to winning). Twice now in the last 15 races, at (I-55) and Central Arizona, we’ve been really close. Just to get the monkey off our back, be able to race to get wins at this point, then as we go on, we’ll let the points figure themselves out.”

Johnson will chase redemption with the Series at the Don Swope Classic at Creek County on Friday, June 5, then face a Saturday bout in the Salute to Service Sprint Car Showdown at 81 on Saturday, June 6.

TOP FIVE STORYLINES: Salt City Combines ASCS National Tour, Gunsmoke Region to Close May

Levi Edgar

HUTCHINSON, KS (May 26, 2026) — Salt City Speedway is set for a Saturday night showdown between two American Sprint Car Series campaigns going head-to-head.

The National Tour and ASCS Gunsmoke Region join forces for the first time in 2026 at the Kansas State Fairgrounds for a Saturday night battle worth a $4,000 payday.

Built in 1910, the “Sunflower State” 1/2-mile first hosted the ASCS Elite North Non-Wing Sprint Cars in 2022 before the Series made its debut in 2025. The 2026 visit will be the Gunsmoke Region’s first time at the track.

Here are the top storylines to look for:

Bergman’s Comeback - Seth Bergman’s rocky debut at Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals fueled an early points comeback that has him sitting in third entering Salt City.

The 2024 Series champion has finished in the top 10 through every ASCS Feature since Central Arizona Speedway, including a podium finish at Salina Highbanks Speedway and his first win of the season at Benton Speedway.

While the Hutchinson, KS, 1/2-mile will also become a first-time visit for the Snohomish, WA driver, he’ll have a second chance at finding his rhythm around bigger racetracks.

Edge of Victory - Sam Hafertepe Jr. has done most of what he has needed to achieve to lead the points standings through the first quarter of the 2026 season.

His only finish outside the top-10 came on the second night at Volusia, won the Sonoran Clash points title, and has finished on the podium in four of the last six Features. However, the box that the Sunnyvale, TX native is looking to cross off is a Feature victory.

He was laps away from crossing the goal at Benton until contact with a lapped car sent him spinning from the lead. Though he rallied to finish ninth, Hafertepe is eyeing his 89th career American Sprint Car Series win to come at Salt City.

Smoking Guns - The ASCS Gunsmoke Region will clash with the National Tour for the first time in 2026 for a debut trip to Salt City Speedway.

In the tour’s season opener at Dodge City Raceway Park on May 2, 15-year-old Ryder McCutcheon drove to the win. When Gunsmoke joined forces with the ASCS Western Plains Region at Phillips County Raceway on Saturday, Series regular Kyler Johnson captured the checkered flag.

Sitting at the top of the region are Zach Blurton and Bryant Wiedeman, each sharing two top fives and a podium appearance, respectively. Blurton was the winner of the 2025 debut at Salt City and will hunt to repeat the feat.

No. 2 Chasing No. 3 - Through four career visits to Salt City Speedway, Whit Gastineau has a handle on what it takes to contend for the Feature win.

Before 2025, Gastineau’s only start was a top-five result with the NCRA Sprint Cars. In the May debut for the National Tour, the Moore, OK driver kept his form with a fifth-place result, then swept the October doubleheader with the Series.

Through the first quarter of 2026, Gatineau sits fifth in Series points, 167 points away from the top of the standings. Saturday in Hutchinson is an opportunity for him to climb higher with a first Feature win of the year.

Back to Half - The Kansas State Fairgrounds is the site of the first 1/2-mile the National Tour has visited in 2026 since Volusia’s season-opening weekend.

Salt City will be the first of two Kansas 1/2-mile tracks the Series will face in 2026 before re-visiting the state for The Big One at Belleville High Banks on Friday-Saturday, June 26-27.

With title contenders Seth Bergman and Matt Covington as the only full-time drivers to visit Victory Lane with the Series this year, eight full-time competitors are chasing to add their name to the year’s wins list. Five drivers seek to make it their first-career ASCS National Tour triumph.

Seth Bergman’s Early Bounce Back Has Him Set For 2026 ASCS Title Fight

Emily Schwanke

CONCORD, NC (May 15, 2026) — Seth Begman knew after the first weekend of the 2026 American Sprint Car Series season that he needed a refresh.

The 2024 Series champion struggled out of the gates at Volusia Speedway Park in his debut appearance in the 55th Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals. Through three 360 Sprint Car Features, Bergman's highest finish was 15th, missed the Friday Feature, and left the Barberville, FL 1/2-mile sitting 18th in points.

“We didn’t get off to the start we had worked or hoped for at Volusia,” Bergman said. “I knew never being there before was going to be a challenge, but I didn’t think we’d be as far off as we were. I unloaded expecting to be close, and we just struggled all weekend with the car. We couldn’t find the right balance. It turned out to be a frustrating weekend, but that’s how it goes.”

When Bergman returned to his Oklahoma-based race shop, he went back to work in his efforts to turn the early momentum back in his direction for Central Arizona Speedway’s Sonoran Clash.

“We came back to the shop and really went back to the drawing board,” Bergman said. “We were trying to figure out why we were awful, basically, and what we could do to make sure that doesn’t happen again moving forward. It’s been an ongoing thing now; I’ve openly been struggling with getting our cars right to where we’re fast all night, both qualifying good and racing good.

“I’ve been spending a lot of time in the shop with the guys, putting thought into what’s going on. Why the cars are doing what they’re doing, and making sense of it all with tires, chassis, engines, wings, suspension. We put a lot of time in the shop, and we’re making headway, but we’re not able to do that unless we’re at the track getting the raw data and feedback. Overall, though, it’s been helpful for us.”

At Central Arizona, Bergman got his points campaign back on the right path with three consecutive top-10s, then capped off the Saturday finale with a fourth-place result.

When the Series crossed paths at Salina Highbanks Speedway in April, the Snohomish, WA native scored his first podium of the season, finishing third after starting the 25-lap Feature in 12th. Instead of returning to his familiar notes from past seasons, Bergman has been writing a new notebook to get a handle on his No. 23 Triple X Chassis.

“I wish we could fall back on the old notebook because that’s what I was trying to do for a while,” Bergman said. “It wasn’t working and seemed like we were getting worse by doing it. The sport progresses, and the tires have changed, so it makes a huge difference in today’s age of racing. I had success running my cars a certain way. We were competitive everywhere, winning races, and saw no reason to change.”

“Then, it started to change, you start to struggle, and you can’t understand why, because you’re not doing anything differently. It’s really been about not going back to the old notebook and creating a new one instead. Recently, I think the results are starting to show, and we feel pretty good about the progress we’ve been making so far.”

Bergman’s encounter with Benton Speedway in 2024 left him with a seventh-place result, but issues with title contender Sam Hafertepe Jr. helped propel him with a healthy points gap for his first Series title.

Returning to the track two years later, it was an opportunity for Bergman to continue rising the ladder as he entered the night sitting fourth in the standings. Rolling off from fifth for the 30-lap Feature, Bergman steadily worked his way through the top five to take the high-point position from Hafertepe after he collided with a lapped car with five laps left, culminating in Bergman’s 27th career National Tour victory.

“Last time we were there, I struggled,” Bergman said. “We ran seventh, but I was not good at all. So, to go back and win was a huge turnaround. It speaks even more to what we’ve been doing lately, so winning the race was a huge morale booster, and it shows the work we’ve been putting in is pointing us in the right direction.

“We weren’t great when we showed up, but we kept working on it all night to get to where we were competitive, or in the fight at least. It’s tricky, tight, and easy to make a mistake, especially when you’re in traffic. There’s a lot going on, because when you’re in the moisture, it’s tacky. But, the second you get out, it’s slick, the tire spins easily, and you get unsettled. It was unfortunate for Sam (Hafertepe), but we were right there trying to keep ourselves out of trouble, and we were able to do that.”

When Bergman travels to Salt City Speedway at the end of the month, it will be his first time visiting the Kansas State Fairgrounds half-mile. Despite the rough debut at Volusia, he knows that he finds comfort faster around bigger tracks than smaller ones.

“If anything, Volusia was just a big learning experience,” Bergman said. “But, it was kind of unique itself because you get around there a bit differently than other places. I know what didn’t work then, and I know how we need to be rolling now.

“Honestly, with the balance and the way we roll our race cars right now, I envision us struggling more at the small places versus the big places. So, I feel like when we get there (to Salt City), we’re going to be up to speed, and I expect to race for wins.”

Bergman will chase down a 66-point gap on Hafertepe for the points lead when the Series makes the stop in the “Sunflower State” at Salt City Speedway on Saturday, May 30.

Austyn Gossel Inching Closer Toward First Career American Sprint Car Series Triumph

Emily Schwanke

BENTON, MO (May 7, 2026) — Austyn Gossel is confident that his first triumph with the American Sprint Car Series is near.

In his third full-time season with the Series, the Fort Collins, CO native is looking to prove his capability of winning on the tour while continuing to grow the chemistry of the team he has around the No. 16G machine.

He’ll continue the milestone quest at Benton Speedway on Friday night. Through his only two appearances at the track with ASCS, Gossel finished 10th in 2024, then earned his career-high at the “Show Me State” 3/8-mile with a fifth-place result in the 2025 showcase.

“I think it’s been the luck of the draw,” Gossel said. “Last year, when we went to Benton, it was really a technical, tricky race surface. It was slick to the bone up to the curb, and there wasn’t even much of a curb, more like a slab of dirt against the wall that you ride all the way around.

“I got a good pill draw, Quick Time in Qualifying, and starting up front with these guys is really crucial, no matter where we are. I’ve found a rhythm there early on, but it’s a really unique track that I really enjoy going there. The last couple of years, it’s been a different surface. But it hasn’t mattered to me what the surface is, I still wound up running up front there. It’s a place that just really suits my style.”

After the Friday visit to Missouri, Gossel will travel 70 miles eastbound to Paducah International Raceway for the Mother’s Day Salute to close the two days of racing with the Series. The high-banked Kentucky track is the place that Gossel has been closest to scoring a victory with ASCS.

He struggled in his first start at the track in 2024 with a 16th-place result. In his second appearance in May of 2025, he improved to finish 12th. When the Series returned in September, Gossel found his rhythm. Beginning the night, he finished third in his Heat race, then drove from a fifth-place starting spot in the Feature to finish runner-up to Jason Martin at the checkered flag.

“It’s kind’ve crazy going from a track like Benton to a really demanding racetrack like Paducah,” Gossel said. “Originally, I didn’t care to go back there because it wasn’t for me. I talked to a few guys about it and figuring out how to race that track. You have to drive really hard, it’s really demanding, and you have to basically drive it up the banking and let the car do its thing.

“But now, I’m really looking forward to going back there. That’ll kind of be our determining factor. If we don’t run good, then we got to figure out something else with our program going forward. There’s really not a reason as to why we should run bad there with the equipment we’ve got and the backing that we got from everyone that support us. You’re going so fast there, that’s the place you need to throw your nuts over your shoulder and get after it.”

Gossel’s team possesses Sprint Car knowledge lasting multiple decades. Last season, veteran Sprint Car crew chief Bobby Craft joined the team for the ASCS visit to Dodge City Raceway Park. That night, Gossel earned his first second-place finish after starting from the pole.

“The first night Bobby came to help us last year, we ended up running second at Dodge City,” Gossel said. “It’s progressed from there, and we should have had a couple wins last year, but things weren’t flying for us.

“So, we’ve really put in the work over the offseason to get better, and our goal was to win at least a couple races. If not that, run up front consistently. We have the speed, we have the equipment, we have all the right things to get us there. We just have to get there as a team.”

Though Gossel sits 10th in Series points entering the weekend, he knows there is room for more growth to be shown. His highest finish of the season is an 11th place from the final night of the Sonoran Clash at Central Arizona Raceway.

On Saturday night, he finished sixth in the ASCS Gunsmoke Region opener at Dodge City Raceway Park in his preparation for more 360 racing in May.

“It’s really about having the mindset that we are capable of running good,” Gossel said. “I’m really glad we made the decision to go run (Gunsmoke) to realize again how much things slow down when you run a 360 compared to a 410 (Sprint Car). Your reaction times slow down, your speed slows down, but you’re better at reacting to situations. Little things like that matter a lot.

“I know if we get something close to the setup we had last year, we can unload out of the box and have a good Qualifying, good Heat, and the luck of the pill draw. The guys you’re gonna be racing with most of the night will be tough, so I think the confidence is key. Going in knowing that we can win on any given night, we’ll just put our eggs in the basket and get after it.”

Gossel will strap aboard his No. 16G Sprint Car with the American Sprint Car Series at Benton Speedway on Friday, May 8, then Paducah International Raceway on Saturday, May 9.

TOP FIVE STORYLINES: Midwest Doubleheader Brings 360 Stars to Benton, Paducah

Emily Schwanke

BENTON, MO (May 5, 2026) — The American Sprint Car Series is set to open the May slate with a return to the Midwest.

The country’s top 360 Sprint Car drivers begin the two-day trek with a stop at Missouri’s Benton Speedway on Friday, May 8. Then, the Series crosses the Kentucky state line to visit Paducah International Raceway for the Mother’s Day Salute on Saturday, May 9. Both Feature races will offer a $4,000 winner’s share.

While the two tracks share the same 3/8-mile length, each brings different characteristics: Benton is a low-banked, gumbo-dirt facility, while Paducah is a high-banked clay racetrack. Both key to the hunt for the Emmett Hahn Championship Trophy.

WATCH ON DIRTVISION

Here’s what to look for this weekend:

Sam Staying Up - Sam Hafertepe Jr. may be looking for his first win of the 2026 season, but he hasn’t lost his way of staying at the top of the Series points standings.

With eight races complete in the ASCS campaign, the Sunnyvale, TX native holds the points lead by 66 markers over Matt Covington as he continues to chase a seventh Series championship.

Hafertepe has a history of feats between the two tracks. He won the 2025 Series event at Benton on the way to clinching the year-end championship. Though he’s never won at Paducah, Hafertepe owns the track’s 360 Sprint Car track record and has two second-place finishes with ASCS.

Hot Pursuit - As the sole championship chaser that has visited Victory Lane in the year, Matt Covington will visit two tracks that have treated him well in recent outings.

In two career starts at Benton, Covington’s highest finish is an eighth-place result from 2024. Across four Paducah appearances, the Glenpool, OK racer holds two ASCS National victories at the track in 2018 and 2025. He sits at a 1.75 average start and has never started outside of the top three.

With a 66-point gap separating Covington from Hafertepe for the Series lead, he has an opportunity to shorten the distance between the two days of racing with his second win of the season.

Who’s Next? - Amongst the field of title chasers in ASCS, five drivers are hoping to cross their first Feature win off the list in 2026.

The highest driver in the standings without a victory is Kyler Johnson, who has finished top-10 in the last six Features, including a top-five and second-place result at Central Arizona Raceway.

Behind Johnson, the Series regulars that are seeking a first-career win at Benton or Paducah include Ryder Laplante, Brogan Carder, Austyn Gossel, and Cole Schroeder. Gossel owns the highest finishes among the group, with a fifth-place at Benton and a runner-up at Paducah – both of which came in 2025.

Steady Gains - Seth Bergman began the 2026 season without scoring a top-10 finish at Volusia Speedway Park. Since then, he’s managed to finish in the top-10 six consecutive times, along with his first podium of the year at Salina Highbanks Speedway.

The 2024 champion’s climb up the Series standings in the last six Features has him placed in fourth, three points away from third-place Kyler Johnson and 102 points behind Hafertepe.

Though the Snohomish, WA driver has never claimed victory at Benton and Paducah, they have each played a hand in his success with the Series. In his only start at Benton in 2024, he finished in seventh place. In three appearances at Paducah, Bergman earned two top fives and a career-high of third in 2024.

Mighty 3/8 Miles - Benton and Paducah have each provided a share of ASCS history, and the May swing will add another chapter for the Series in entering the first racing weekend of May.

Benton made its debut in 1995 with all-time Series winner Gary Wright taking victory. The next year, Terry Gray and Jerrod Hull were triumphant in two races in June and July, respectively. In the return to the “Show Me State” track in 2024, Missouri native Joe B. Miller claimed his second career Series win, then Sam Hafertepe Jr took the most recent Feature win in 2025 at the facility.

Paducah made its first appearance with the Series in 2018 as Matt Covington captured his sixth career Series win. When the “Blue Grass State” 3/8-mile returned to the schedule in 2024, Sand Springs, OK’s Hank Davis scored his most recent ASCS triumph. Two separate visits to Paducah in 2025 saw Covington return to Victory Lane in May, and Jason Martin bagging the September showcase.
