TWO-SDAY: David Gravel Tops Three-Leader Thriller in World of Outlaws Mississippi Thunder Debut

Tyler Carr

The Watertown, CT native wheels from fourth to the front to become the inaugural Series winner at the Wisconsin track

FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (August 19, 2025) - The hype was off the charts for Tuesday’s World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series debut at Mississippi Thunder Speedway, and it didn’t let fans down.

The green flag waved for the main event and unleashed a 30-lap, three-leader thriller at the Fountain City, WI dirt track. Early on it was the home state favorite Bill Balog leading the way from the pole in search of a popular victory. Then the Shark Racing No. 1S struck as Logan Schuchart hunted down Balog and took the top spot. Not many laps later defending Series champion joined the fun as he snatched the lead on Lap 9.

Once Gravel led the way, he and the Big Game Motorsports team appeared as if they were on their way to a comfortable win, but Michael “Buddy” Kofoid had other plans. The Roth Motorsports No. 83 started ninth and climbed into second by the 21st circuit. Traffic tightened things up on the final lap, but Kofoid just couldn’t find a route around Gravel.

The Watertown, CT took the checkered flag to become the inaugural Mississippi Thunder winner with The Greatest Show on Dirt.

“I know my two laps before that (the last lap) weren’t very good,” Gravel admitted. “Lapped cars were kind of running top and bottom and trying to run the middle and not really committing to the top in (Turns) 1 and 2. I spun my tires and got sideways. I know got through (Turns) 3 and 4 really good on the last lap, but I just needed a lap like that. Luckily, it was good enough to get the job done.

“Truly I didn’t know where to run. I think the bottom was really good early, and then it got slick on entry and was hard to carry speed. I had the wing pretty far back and didn’t want to get too far back so I could still steer. Just happy to get the job done.”

Gravel pushed his 2025 World of Outlaws win total to a dozen, which stands atop the list by three over Carson Macedo. His career total sits at 115. Mississippi Thunder is now the 52nd different track where Gravel has won. His point lead grew to 172 markers with 50 races in the books.

Kofoid claimed the runner-up spot after his spirited run from the fifth row. The ninth to second effort was enough to earn him KSE Racing Products Hard Charger honors. He and the Roth Motorsports team have been on the podium in five of the last seven races.

“We had a really good Roth Motorsports, Mobil 1, Toyota No. 83 and were really coming on late,” Kofoid said. “Then that restart with seven to go doesn’t seal the fate. I didn’t think we’d actually get into traffic like that. Clean air for anyone, especially David, helps, but we were able to pace him better than I thought. In traffic, I feel like we had a chance that last lap. I was able to do a big diamond again and got close. It’s just tough with lappers and trying to navigate them and also pass for the win but still really happy with how our night ended.”

The final podium position belonged to Logan Schuchart. After no top threes for nearly two months, the Hanover, PA native and the Shark Racing crew have now put together back-to-back podium efforts to go along with the Jackson Motorplex runner-up on Saturday. Despite the strong showing, Schuchart is still hoping he and the team can summon some more speed down the home stretch of his 12th World of Outlaws campaign.

“I was ready for that race to be over because we were not very good,” Schuchart said. “We were just kind of hanging on there. I think the starting position helped us out. Happy to be on the podium the last couple races with a second last race and a third here. Two good runs.”

Bill Balog and Garet Williamson completed the top five.

David Gravel got his 16th Simpson Quick Time of 2025 in Honest Abe Roofing Qualifying and set a new track record.

Heat Races belonged to David Gravel (NOS Energy Drink Heat One), Sheldon Haudenschild (Real American Beer Heat Two), and Bill Balog (WIX Filters Heat Three).

Bill Balog got his third straight SPA Technique #1 Redraw.

Balog also topped the Toyota Dash.

Conner Morrell won the Micro-Lite Last Chance Showdown.

The Smith Titanium Brake Systems Break of the Race went to Sheldon Haudenschild.

CHADDY: Cypert’s Journey to World of Outlaws Crew Chief

The California native is navigating his first season turning wrenches with The Greatest Show on Dirt

GRAND FORKS, ND (August 20, 2025) - Garet Williamson isn’t the only rookie to the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series in the Fischer Motorsports organization.

For team crew chief Chad Cypert, better known in the pit area as “Chaddy,” it’s a lifelong dream realized. He put in the time and effort, worked his way up, and finally made the climb to calling the shots on a team with The Greatest Show on Dirt.

Cypert comes from California and was born into a racing family. He shares a hometown with eight-time Northern Auto Racing Club (NARC) champion LeRoy Van Conett and looks at the “Dragon from Galt” as one of his heroes. A childhood spent in Sprint Car racing put Cypert on his own path in the sport.

“It’s what my dad did for a living, he was a race car mechanic,” Cypert recalled. “We always had race cars at my house growing up. He won the 1990 USAC championship with Steve Butler in the Johnny Vance Aristocrat car. He was the crew chief on that. When I was a little kid in California, we had the Wright One Construction car at our house. Tim Kaeding drove it and Jonathan Allard and Roger Crockett. That stuff was always at my house for years and years.

“Me and my brother, we used to get checked out of school every Friday, semi-truck and trailer, Featherlite with the rig right in front of the school. Got to go to the “dentist” again. We used to go every week growing up. I played sports and stuff too, but it (racing) was always there. It always felt like it’s what I was supposed to do.”

Cypert learned the ropes from his father before eventually branching out. His first job on his own was working on Dave and Debbie Vertullo’s No. 83V in the late 2000s on the west coast. The driver? Some teenager named Kyle Larson.

His career expanded into roles in the Midwest throughout the 2010s, and his first stint working with Williamson came in 2020 with BPM Motorsports, a connection Williamson was eager to make.

“He was (Jonathan) Cornell’s crew chief,” Williamson said. “I remember growing up being from Missouri watching the 28 win everything, and obviously Chaddy was the crew chief for that. I wasn’t running Sprint Cars yet, and it wasn’t really a thought. Obviously, I always wanted to go race Sprint Cars. Then the opportunity came, and everything got serious pretty quick and needed a crew chief. And I was like, ‘Man, if I could ever get Chaddy that would be pretty cool,’ and things all worked out. In 2020 we got Chaddy to go on the road with us.”

The two wound up going their separate ways, but with Williamson and the Fischer team gearing up for a World of Outlaws run in 2025 and “Chaddy” looking to do the same, the stars aligned for a reunion.

“D-M-J (Dennis Moore Jr.) was ready to come off the road, and I wanted to run the Outlaw deal, and how often do you get an Outlaw team five minutes from your house?” Cypert said. “So, I hopped on with them after I finished out my obligations that I promised the Heidbreders. We ran all the way through the Hockett, and then I went right to the 23 team and just took over that once they got done with the California swing with the Outlaws. I talked with Garet a lot and Dennis a lot, and we all just agreed it would be a good fit. It’s where I ended up and what we’ve got going right now.”

It's been a tricky journey at times. Cypert may have been involved in the sport for more than a decade, but he also considers himself a rookie of sorts since it’s his first year turning the wrenches on a World of Outlaws team. He’s seeing many of the tracks on the calendar for the first time just like Williamson.

“We’re both going into these places open minded,” Williamson said. “We have nothing to lose. We’re both going into it trying to absorb as much information we can. We’re trying to unload the best we can and go from there. With the Outlaws it’s a little bit tougher because you’ve got two laps to figure out your whole night. It’s hard to pass these guys. They’re the best in the country for a reason. That part is definitely tough, but I feel like we’re tackling it well together.”

Despite some challenges, it’s been a successful season for the team. Williamson recently took the top spot from Chris Windom in the chase for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year among one of the most competitive classes ever. They followed that up with a top 10 finish in the NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s in what was Williamson’s first Championship Feature as a driver and Cypert’s first as a crew chief. They’ve pieced together 10 top 10 finishes in the last 16 races. The home stretch of the season is almost here, and they’re clicking at the right time.

“It’s awesome,” Cypert said of Williamson leading the rookie points. “I tried to tell the boys and car owners at the beginning of the year to not even look at points until after Knoxville. There’s no reason to stress over them every night. It’s a long year. We’re both basically rookies at the same time because I haven’t been to 50 percent of these tracks either, so it’s just trusting each other and working on our stuff. We both just agreed that what we want to do is obviously we want to win Rookie of the Year, but most importantly we want to work as hard as we can, make every show, and earn the respect of our peers and prove that we belong more than anything. If Rookie of the Year happens, that’s awesome. If it doesn’t, we know we gave it our all, and that’s all we can do.”

Williamson, Cypert, and the entire Fischer Motorsports crew continue the 2025 World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car campaign this weekend in North Dakota at River Cities Speedway (Grand Forks, ND) on Friday, Aug. 22 and Red River Valley Speedway (West Fargo, ND) on Saturday, Aug. 23. For tickets, CLICK HERE.

Cypert returns to his native California with the team in just a few weeks when the World of Outlaws invade the Golden State for back-to-back weekends Sept. 12-13 at Bakersfield Speedway at Kevin Harvick’s Kern Raceway and Perris Auto Speedway and Sept. 19-20 in the Dennis Roth Classic at Thunderbowl Raceway.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Mississippi Thunder Debut, North Dakota Weekend Ahead for World of Outlaws

A new Wisconsin track precedes a pair of staples on the World of Outlaws calendar

FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (August 18, 2025) - Another busy week awaits as the home stretch for the 2025 World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series season nears.

First, a new track is ahead as The Greatest Show on Dirt debuts at Mississippi Thunder Speedway on Tuesday, Aug. 19. The World of Outlaws Real American Beer Late Models have made 10 trips to the Fountain City, WI track, but it’ll be the first ever for their Sprint Car counterparts. The Interstate Racing Association (IRA) Sprint Cars have served up some thrillers at Mississippi Thunder, and fans should expect no different when the country’s top talent rolls into town.

Two off days follow the Mississippi Thunder debut before the tour invades North Dakota for two nights. The weekend opens with the 35th visit in Series history to Grand Forks, ND’s River Cities Speedway on Friday, Aug. 22. Of the more than 400 tracks longtime World of Outlaws announcer Johnny Gibson has visited, River Cities has the honor of being his favorite.

The three-race week wraps up at West Fargo, ND’s Red River Valley Speedway on Saturday, Aug. 23. It’ll be the 71st trip to the 3/8 mile as the track strengthens its status as the most visited within the borders of the “Peace Garden State.”

Let’s look at the week’s top storylines:

EMPTY NOTEBOOKS: The midweek stop at Mississippi Thunder may serve as a rare equalizer.

Even if a facility is new to The Greatest Show on Dirt, usually a driver’s early experience might lead them to a track before they embark on a full World of Outlaws tour, but that’s simply not the case in this instance. Nearly every single 2025 full-time competitor will be making their first laps there.

That means most teams will enter the pit area with empty notebooks. Nobody has pages filled out from dozens or even a few previous races. Could it offer a chance for a new winner to arise? Tuesday will answer that question.

NORTH POLE KNOWLEDGE: The exception to the previous section? That would be Bill Balog. Of the full-time World of Outlaws competitors, he’s the only one to have made laps at the Wisconsin track.

It hasn’t been many laps as he’s raced there on just one occasion, but the result was an encouraging one. The “North Pole Nightmare” won with IRA at Mississippi Thunder 13 years ago on the way to the fifth of his now 10 titles with the Series.

With just two races remaining in his home state this year, the Hartland, WI resident will be looking to celebrate a victory with the countless “Badgers” that support him. He’s won twice already this year (Talladega Short Track and Huset’s Speedway) and enters the week fresh off two top fives in Minnesota.

HOME SWEET HOME: The trip home to North Dakota over the weekend will look a little different for Donny Schatz. For the first time since 2007, he won’t be aboard a Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing entry as he continues his three-week stretch with Big Game Motorsports. The 10-time Series champion did have to hop in Dave Lunstra’s car this past Saturday at Jackson after a Friday crash at Ogilvie in the Big Game No. 15, but the plan is for him to be back in Tod Quiring’s car this week.

Schatz’s River Cities résumé is remarkable. He’s competed in all 34 World of Outlaws races at the 1/4 mile, won a dozen of them, and missed the top five on only three occasions. His worst River Cities finish? Eighth. He’s been plenty successful at Red River Valley as well with six victories with The Greatest Show on Dirt and was on the podium in the most recent visit in May.

While Schatz’s debut with Big Game didn’t go as he hoped, the Fargo, ND driver did rebound with a Jackson top 10 in Lunstra’s machine.

MINNESOTA MOMENTUM: There’s one man with all the momentum entering this week, and his name is Carson Macedo.

The Lemoore, CA driver and his Jason Johnson Racing team swept the Minnesota weekend at Ogilvie and Jackson, upping their total in the 2025 win column to nine. They’ve topped five of the last 12 races this year. Macedo is one checkered flag away from his fourth 10-win season.

Like the majority of the World of Outlaws competitors, Macedo will make his Mississippi Thunder debut Tuesday. He’s a two-time River Cities winner (2022 and 2024) and has finished sixth or better in his last eight visits to the quarter mile. He’s also topped Red River Valley twice and hasn’t finished worse than eighth in six tries.

Macedo is still looking to surpass Michael “Buddy” Kofoid for the runner-up spot in points. Currently 52 markers separate the two Californians.

HAUD’S HUNT: Earlier this year Sheldon Haudenschild checked off a track that had long eluded him when he finally won at Haubstadt, IN’s Tri-State Speedway, and he’s ready to replicate that at one of the ovals ahead.

It’s been a similar story for Haudenschild at River Cities. He’s made 15 trips to the Grand Forks, ND bullring without a trip to Victory Lane with several close calls. The Wooster, OH native has been a River Cities runner-up on three occasions (2021, 2023, and 2024), started on the front row five times, and led Feature laps six times.

Haudenschild is fresh off finishes of fifth and sixth at Ogilvie and Jackson with the Stenhouse Jr.-Marshall Racing/NOS Energy Drink team. He’s fifth in points and on the hunt for his first win since conquering Red River Valley on the final day of May.

Jake Bubak Ready to Battle National ASCS Stars in Ostermiller Memorial at Big Sky

Brent Smith

BILLINGS, MT (Aug. 21, 2025) — For each part of the country the American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) visits, there’s a least one driver from the region that contends with the national touring stars lap-after-lap for the win.

This Friday–Saturday, Aug. 22–23, the Series’ best take on the two-time and defending winner of the richest motorsports event in the state of Montana — Jake Bubak.

The 30-year-old open-wheel standout from Arvada, CO, has banked over $24,000 in the past two years, winning Big Sky Speedway’s marquee Sprint Car event that salutes one of its founding members — the Harvey Ostermiller Memorial. This weekend, he aims to become the race’s only three-time winner.

“It’s neat to say we’ve won that race twice,” Bubak said. “The list of drivers who have won it is pretty stout, so being on that is nice. Anytime you can win a race that’s over $10,000-to-win, it definitely helps our team and helps me. It’d be a big bonus.”

This year, the two-day event features an upgraded $15,000-to-win, $1,200-to-start, purse and pits the nation’s best 360 Sprint Car racers against the best of the ASCS Frontier Region. Bubak claimed victory in 2023 under the sole banner of the Frontier Region before backing it up and defeating the national Series stars one year ago.

“I don’t get to race near as often as a lot of those guys, and I’ve never traveled with a touring series nationally or anything like that,” Bubak said. “So, when we’re able to compete with Sam (Hafertepe) and Seth (Bergman) and Matt Covington and Jason Martin and all those guys, it definitely makes us feel good.”

While Bubak does not align himself with any one series to race throughout the year, he’s become one of the Rocky Mountain State’s best exports in dirt track racing in his climb from out of the local 305 Sprint Car ranks. Starting in 2011, Bubak began chasing the Kansas-based United Rebel Sprint Series and competing at his home track of Dodge City Speedway.

After hoisting three-straight URSS championships from 2013–2015, Bubak transitioned to the 360 ranks and has made his mark in ASCS competition, winning multiple races with the ASCS Sooner Region and the former ASCS Warrior Region. In 2017, he broke through for his first national ASCS win at West Texas Raceway before following up with consecutive wins at WaKeeney Speedway in 2022 and 2023 and a preliminary Feature in the 2023 Hockett/McMillin Memorial.

His most recent national Series triumph came in the Ostermiller Memorial at Big Sky last year, topping touring stars Zach Blurton, Bergman, and Hafertepe. Hafertepe drove to 12 wins in national Series competition last year and has nine in the first 18 races so far in 2025.

Last weekend, Hafertepe and Bubak crossed the finish line one–two at WaKeeney Speedway after a high-speed chase through lapped traffic around the 4/10-mile Kansas dirt track. Though Hafertepe came out on top after passing for the lead at the halfway point, and Bubak was disqualified for weighing light at the scales post-race, the race gave a preview of what Big Sky Speedway fans can expect from the two drivers this weekend.

“I feel the last couple of years, we’ve been able to give Sam a run for his money pretty much anywhere we went,” Bubak said. “He’s so good in a 360, so knowing that we can compete with him and run with him, it definitely shows that our program is on the right track.”

Bubak has made only six starts at Big Sky in his career but said he feels at home racing the 3/8-mile track, which sits over 550 miles north of his house.

“It’s a lot like racing where I grew up in Western Kansas,” Bubak said. “It’s really slick and dry and windy. It just kinda fits what we’ve always done with our cars and how I like to drive.”

He’s bested the national touring stars at the track before. He knows the winning formula. If he can score victory once more in the finale Saturday night, he’ll pocket $15,000 in cash and bragging rights as victor of the richest event in Montana motorsports history.

“That’s the whole reason we’re going, thinking that we can win it,” Bubak said. “It’s a good group of guys. We’ve just gotta do our job and qualify well. If you can qualify well and get in that Dash, you know you’re gonna start in the first two or three rows, which makes your job a lot easier.”

Bubak takes on the stars of the American Sprint Car Series and ASCS Frontier Region in the two-day Harvey Ostermiller Memorial at Big Sky Speedway, Friday–Saturday, Aug. 22–23.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Harvey Ostermiller Memorial at Big Sky Clashes ASCS National, Frontier Region Stars

Brent Smith

BILLINGS, MT (Aug. 19, 2025) — The American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) begins its annual outing in “Big Sky Country” this Friday–Saturday, Aug. 22–23, at Big Sky Speedway in Billings, MT, for the annual running of the Harvey Ostermiller Memorial.

Big Sky Speedway has been a home to multiple races nearly every season since 2013 with the ASCS Frontier Region, helping foster a region of dedicated and competitive 360 Sprint Car racers. This weekend, those drivers will meet the national Series stars for the eighth time in history at the 3/8-mile oval, racing for a $4,000 check on Friday before the $15,000-to-win finale on Saturday.

The event is run in memory of local Montana racer Harvey Ostermiller, who was killed in a 2016 car accident at the age of 70. Outside of his 40-plus-year career in the seat, the Billings native was noted for his role in constructing Big Sky Speedway, which opened in 2003 and is now owned and operated by promoter Jerry Brey.

Tickets for both nights of the event are on sale now at the link below and will also be sold at the track on race day. If you can’t be there to watch in person, stream every lap live on DIRTVision.

FRIDAY + SATURDAY TICKETS

Here are the drivers to watch for and storylines to follow this weekend:

KING OF THE FRONTIER — When the northernmost regional subdivisions of the American Sprint Car Series go racing, one driver stands above the rest.

Canadian Sprint Car standout Kelly Miller is the two-time and defending ASCS Frontier Region champion. The 34-year-old Lethbridge, AB-native won both the Frontier and the Northern Plains Region championships last year with six wins in Frontier competition. He currently leads the Frontier Region points standings with five Feature wins and nine top-five finishes in the first 10 races, aiming for an unprecedented third-straight points championship with eight races left on the schedule.

Historically, Miller has been one of the most successful Sprint Car racers at Big Sky with 10 career Feature wins at the track, including three this year with the Frontier Region. In last year’s running of the Ostermiller Memorial, Miller was the highest-finishing ASCS regional driver, driving from 16th on the starting grid to finish seventh in the main event.

BIG SKY BIG DOG — For the past two years, the Ostermiller Memorial has been ruled by regional 360 Sprint Car racer Jake Bubak.

The 30-year-old from Arveda, CO, topped the 2023 edition of the event, which was sanctioned only by the ASCS Frontier Region. When the national ASCS stars invaded one year ago, Bubak stood up against the tall competition again, leading all 30 laps to pocket the $12,012 check and secure his fifth career national Series victory.

Bubak has been competitive with the Series this year, making three starts outside of Knoxville and posting three top-10 finishes — one of which came as a runner-up effort at WaKeeney Speedway last Friday, which was later vacated after coming up light at the scales.

TALK OF THE TOWN — Two weeks following his victory in the sport’s biggest crown jewel event, Ryan Timms is headed for Big Sky Speedway this weekend with Liebig Motorsports.

Timms, 18, of Oklahoma City, OK, led the 64th running of the NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s flag-to-flag for the biggest win of his career last Saturday at Knoxville Raceway, topping the world’s best 410 Sprint Car drivers to claim the $195,000 grand prize. After backing that up with another win in weekly competition at Huset’s Speedway one week later, Timms and car owner Shane Liebig have hooked the Hampel Oil No. 10 up with a 360 engine and will make the tow to Billings to compete for the $15,000 grand prize.

Outside of the ASCS-sanctioned 360 Knoxville Nationals, Timms has not made an appearance with the national Series since sweeping the Winged Sprint Car portion of the 2023 Hockett/McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway, nor has he ever competed at Big Sky in any form.

THE CHAMP RETURNS — For the first time since June, Seth Bergman is projected to join the American Sprint Car Series roster this weekend at a place he’s had success at before.

Bergman, the reigning Series champion from Snohomish, WA, has three career victories in ASCS competition at Big Sky, including a sweep of a two-day ASCS Frontier Region event in 2020, and the preliminary night of the Ostermiller Memorial last August with the national Series.

This weekend, he’s projected to be racing Big Sky with the national Series for the first time since Batesville Motor Speedway in June. Diverting from the national Series schedule shortly after, Bergman spent some time racing back around his native Washington, making four appearances at Skagit Speedway and recording two podium finishes — one with a 410 engine in the car — three top-fives and a seventh place in the marquee Fred Brownfield 360 Nationals event.
