Ryan Timms Dominates 64th NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals Presented by Casey’s!
By Bill Wright

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (August 9, 2025) – Ryan Timms put a stamp on a dominating week at the 64th running of the NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s by winning $195,000 in the finale Saturday night at the Knoxville Raceway. Timms became the second youngest to win the Nationals, and the second to win in the first Knoxville Nationals finale he qualified for. The first on both occasions was Kenny Weld in 1964, who was just two months younger than Timms’ 18 years and 11 months. The Nationals win was the first for Rapid City, South Dakota owner Shane Liebig. Timms led all 50 laps, and was the sixth of the season for him in the 410 here at Knoxville. The Oklahoma City, Oklahoma native was also the first Knoxville regular (in the point standings) to win the Knoxville Nationals since 1978 (Doug Wolfgang finished fourth in points that year), and the first Oklahoman to win the “Granddaddy of them All.”

Thanks to his win on Wednesday, and his highest point total, Timms earned the pole for Saturday’s championship event. He led from the outset ahead of Carson Macedo, Corey Day, Brad Sweet and Logan Schuchart. He was in lapped traffic by the eighth circuit. Schuchart showed early speed nabbing fourth from Sweet on lap 10.

Sheldon Haudenschild entered the top five on lap 15, but it was a brief stay as a five-way battle for positions two through six ensued. Gio Scelzi spent time in the top five, as did Sweet, but Rico Abreu had solidified himself in the position on lap 20.

Schuchart and Abreu found speed and passed Day, but those moves were negated as the mandatory midway break was called after lap 26. At that point, Timms had built a 4.3 second lead. He was in a class by himself after the break as well, over Macedo, Day, Schuchart and Abreu.

Schuchart got over the turn four cushion, losing ground and surrendering fourth and fifth to Abreu and Sweet. Rico shot by Day into third on lap 30, before Buddy Kofoid and Spencer Bayston came together to bring the caution with 18 laps to go. That erased a 3.8 second lead for Timms.

The youngster was back in traffic with eight laps to go and had built his lead to more than three seconds at that point. David Gravel was on the move as well, and up to sixth with six laps to go. Sweet bowed out of the race while running fifth before an eighth place Kyle Larson blew his right rear tire, bringing out the caution with four to go. Again a lead of over two seconds was erased, but it was no sweat for Timms, who cruised to the checkers, pulling away to a win almost three seconds ahead of Abreu, who grabbed second from Macedo. Gravel passed Macedo late for hard-charger honors and Schuchart was fifth. Day, Scelzi, Garet Williamson, Austin McCarl and Haudenschild rounded out the top ten.

Tanner Holmes was the D main winner, and Kerry Madsen took the C main. Brent Marks claimed the B main. The D main saw a bit of carnage as Zach Hampton and Jordan Goldesberry crashed before it even got started, and Matt Juhl and Matt Vandervere got upside down during the race. Kelby Watt flipped during the B main, as did Brock Zearfoss, who crashed while running in the fourth and final transfer spot. No one was seriously injured.

Special Awards handed out included the $2,000 SprintCarUnlimited.com Pole Award to Timms, the DGRD Best Appearing Car: 1. Jimmy Light ($2,500) 2. Tanner Holmes ($1,500) 3. Brandon Wimmer ($1,000); the Avanti Windows & Doors Best Appearing Crew: 1. Schuchart ($500) 2. Marks ($250) 3. Carson Macedo ($150); the Think-n-Ink Best Appearing Helmet: 1. Carson Macedo ($500) 2. Brenham Crouch ($300) 3. Jamie Ball ($200); and Trunk Bar 7th in the D: Josh Schneiderman ($1,911).

Ankeny, Iowa’s Cam Martin, who finished 13th was the Jetco Rookie of the Nationals ($1,000). Gravel’s hard-charger effort earned him $270 from the “Beer Can Crusaders” and a steering wheel from MPi.

Timms was also the Beaver Drill & Tool/MPV Express Jesse Hockett “Mr. Sprint Car” for Southern Iowa Sprintweek, netting a bonus of $10,000. Austin McCarl was second ($6,000) and James McFadden third ($4,000).

“This is awesome!” said Timms in Victory Lane. “I never thought I’d be standing here for the Knoxville Nationals! I don’t even know what to say. To be given this opportunity is amazing. Shane Liebig is my crew chief and car owner and has coached me through this whole thing. I have so many people to thank. It’s been a journey, and to click at the biggest sprint car race in the world so soon…I really can’t believe I’m standing here. I had no idea how big of a lead I had. I kept looking at the big screen. I kept imagining cars to my inside. This car is so fast. Knoxville is its track. I knew the bottom was going to be good in three and four, but I didn’t feel very comfortable down there, so I moved to the top. We were able to run the bottom of one and two and drift to the middle. The last caution was good; I think I had two tear-offs left. This is the best race in the world across all forms of motorsports. To stand here in front of you fans is just a pleasure.”

“Hat’s off to the Liebig guys, Ryan Timms and Randy Timms,” said Abreu. “I know how focused Ryan has been this year, and to make his first Knoxville Nationals and start on the front row of the race, and lead all fifty laps is pretty damn impressive. My team made incredible changes at the break. It allows us to smell a little blood in the water when we have a strong car at the end of the race like that. It was a roaring pace with the 41, the 49, the 14BC and the 57 was there too. I was trying to focus on hitting my marks in one and two. My car was really fast there. This place has an incredible atmosphere when it comes to racing, and I tell all my friends they have to come at least one time, and if they do, they’ll want to come back consistently. I love being able to come back here and race.”

“We had a really good car,” said Gravel of his hard charge from 21st to third. “The second half of those runs, the car was unbelievable. I just have to say this race is not easy to win, and to put together a prelim night and lead all 50 laps with the best in the business behind you is impressive. I’m super proud of our team not giving up. I wish we could have started a couple rows further up, I felt like we were so good at the end. I felt like we had one of the fastest cars. The last restart with four to go, I think we all swapped second through fifth a few times. I’m just proud of our effort.”

David Gravel Wins “Hard Knox” Night at Knoxville; Buddy Kofoid, Cole Macedo and Daryn Pittman Head for Saturday’s Championship!
By Bill Wright

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (August 8, 2025) – FVP “Hard Knox” Night turned into a long one Friday at the 64th NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals Presented by Casey’s. In the end, David Gravel emerged with his 14th career win at Knoxville Raceway and a ticket to Saturday’s championship finale. The driver of the Big Game Motorsports #2 will be joined in Saturday’s big show by the second place car of Buddy Kofoid, Cole Macedo and Daryn Pittman, who will start 21st through 24th respectively in the $195,000 to win finale. (Saturday lineups are below)

Anthony Macri slowed before a lap could be completed in the scheduled 25-lap main event, having gotten over the rear tire of Daison Pursley, and he restarted at the tail. Madsen led early over Ashton Torgerson, Pittman, Chase Dietz and Gravel. Gravel shot from fifth to third on lap two.

Dietz passed Pittman for fourth on lap three before the seventh place running Kelby Watt blew a right rear tire three laps in, bringing a caution. Madsen led Torgerson, Gravel, Dietz and Pittman back to green. Macedo quickly moved into 5th and then used a slider in turn three to pass Dietz for the fourth and final transfer to the Saturday A main on lap seven.

Nine laps in, Justin Whittall took a scary crash in turn one and was transported for observation. Gravel and Macedo shot by Torgerson for second and third on the restart, while Pittman returned to the top five.

Gravel reeled in Madsen and passed him for the lead on lap 13, while Kofoid had moved from 19th to take sixth from Donny Schatz. With ten to go, Carson McCarl tipped over in turn three. He was uninjured. Gravel now led Madsen, Macedo, Torgerson and Pittman. Pittman snatched fourth from Torgerson, but a three-way battle for the spot ensued when Kofoid entered the mix, and grabbed the spot on lap 17.

With six to go, Watt jumped the berm, with Brandon Wimmer and JJ Hickle trying to avoid. Jamie Ball took evasive action over the cushion and flipped in turn three. He was uninjured. Gravel led Masden, Macedo, Kofoid and Pittman back to green. Kofoid quickly took third and then grabbed second from Madsen with three to go. On the last lap, Madsen slowed from his third running position, bringing caution. He slowed again on the ensuing restart, and eventually exited.

A green, white, checker finish added a lap to the feature, but it was Gravel maintaining his win ahead of Kofoid and Macedo. Pittman held off a late charge from Schatz to garner the final transfer position for Saturday’s championship. Torgerson finished sixth, and Pursley, Macri, Watt and Dietz rounded out the top ten. Torgerson and Madsen set quick time in their respective groups, and Schatz, Macri, Wimmer, Macedo, Gravel and Chase Randall won the six heats. Jack Dover won the C, and Kofoid and Whittall claimed the B mains. Kaleb Johnson was a flip victim in his heat, but walked away from the accident.

“Obviously, you don’t want to run on Friday night,” said Gravel in Victory Lane. “We felt good all night long. I messed up in qualifying, but the pill draw helped us out there to be in a good spot. Obviously, it must have been a great racetrack if Buddy Kofoid was coming from the back and Donny Schatz was coming from the back. I’m sure you guys got a good show. It was treacherous fast for awhile, and the top curbed up. It didn’t feel that good for me on lap five, and I saw the bottom was wet. I’m glad I tried on that restart, because I probably would have been chopped liver and they were probably going to pass me. Thank you to my guys. This is the same car we flipped on Wednesday. It’s not perfect, but it’s good enough.”

“We felt lights out in the B main, and honestly, I think it was a blessing to run it,” said Kofoid beside the Roth Motorsports #83. “We were able to get our car better, and we needed laps for the car and laps for myself here. In the feature, I just kept getting really good starts. I got to the top and it got treacherous after a few laps. If you told me I would be in the Knoxville Nationals after our qualifying night, I would have told you you were crazy and put money on it. We were happy to make a charge like that against a good group of cars.”

“After our prelim last night, I thought there was no way,” said Macedo of his drive to third in the Todd Carlile #2c. “Luckily, I have a great group of guys behind me. They went to work and made the car night and day better. Luckily, the track played into what I do best and that’s go up and pound the curb as hard as I can. I was getting nervous with all those cautions. The bottom was getting better and the top was getting a curb. I’m just so happy. This show is so hard to make. I’m pumped.”

“The way we’ve been running this car, making the A main was going to be a big task,” said Pittman of his ride in the Lunstra #3L. “I just have to thank Dave and Jamie Lunstra for giving me a chance to race. Race car drivers without great owners are spectators. I’m proud to be locked in. We’ve got a lot of work to do. We’re not really good, but we have the opportunity to improve that tomorrow night.”

Kyle Larson Conquers Night #2 of the Knoxville Nationals; Ryan Timms and Carson Macedo on Saturday Front Row!
By Bill Wright

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (August 7, 2025) – Kyle Larson grabbed his thirteenth career win Thursday on Toyota Qualifying Night #2 of the 64th NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals Presented by Casey’s. The Elk Grove, California driver earned $12,000 for the win, and locked himself into the fifth row of Saturday’s championship finale, where he will seek his third straight championship. Carson Macedo was the high point driver for the night and will join Wednesday’s winner, Ryan Timms, who becomes the youngest ever pole-sitter in the “Granddaddy of them all!” (full points are below)

Derek Hagar led the non-stop 25-lap main event early over Spencer Bayston, Giovanni Scelzi, Larson and Bill Balog. Logan Schuchart entered the top five on lap two. Bayston wrestled the lead form hagar on lap three, while Larson found his way by Scelzi for the third spot.

Larson continued his charge by passing Hagar for second on lap five, and Scelzi followed him into third a circuit later. Schuchart was up to fourth by lap seven. Bayston entered lapped traffic on lap eight.

Larson reeled in Bayston, and shot a slide job on him on lap 13 to take the lead for good. Schuchart came on late, grabbing third from Scelzi on lap 16 and second from Bayston with a slider in three with six to go. Finishing second earned him a second row starting spot for Saturday. Bayston finished third, ahead of Scelzi and Macedo. Balog, Brock Zearfoss, hard-charger Brad Sweet, Hagar and Tasker Phillips rounded out the top ten.

In preliminary action, Brad Sweet set quick time over the 49-car field, while Gage Pulkrabek, Phillips, Josh Schneiderman, Christopher Thram and Brady Bacon were heat winners. Brian Brown was third quick, but flipped hard in turn two in his heat after trying for several laps to pass JJ Hickle for the final transfer. He walked away. Matt Vandervere turned over in practice, but returned for his heat race. Jacob Hughes won the C main and Sweet claimed the B.

Friday’s “Hard Knox Night” will see all drivers not locking into Saturday’s A (16) and the B (10) start fresh. The top four finishers will qualify for Saturday’s main event, while the fifth place finisher on back will fill the eleventh starting spot in the B on back through the alphabet.

“Honestly, I’m out of breath,” said Larson in Victory Lane beside Paul Silva’s #57. “That was a fast pace for 25 laps there. The track was really slick, but against (the cushion) it was really gripped up. It just made it like really technical, and the car was dancing around a lot. I was using both feet and steering a lot. I got stuck behind (Cam Martin) for awhile, and I figured they were closing on me. I got by him with a few to go, and I felt I could rest a little easier after that. I wish we would have done better a little earlier in the night. It will be good enough to lock into the feature for sure.”

“This will be our best starting position yet,” said Schuchart of his prospects on Saturday. “I didn’t think I felt real good. I know we were catching Kyle at the end, but I don’t know if we’re as good as we need to be. We didn’t qualify that well, but we did what we needed to do in the heat race and this A main. We’re on the podium, and we’re very happy and proud of this Shark Racing Team.”

“We lacked speed early and ran into some issues,” said Bayston, who locked himself into the last available spot in Saturday’s championship (16th). “We didn’t give up. We had a bit of an issue with fueling in hot laps. We ended up with a time…I didn’t think I did a good job of qualifying. We rebounded a little bit in the heat race and started up front. We set a good pace, but started to waver a little bit. I knew I was probably going to get somebody visiting me at some point. It turned out the 57 got by me quick. I just got back to what I was doing and ran the top and the car felt really, really good.”

It’s All Ryan Timms On Opening Night of the Knoxville Nationals!
By Bill Wright

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (August 6, 2025) – Ryan Timms was in a class by himself on Brandt Professional Agriculture Qualifying Night #1 at the 64th NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals Presented by Casey’s Wednesday night at the Knoxville Raceway. The Oklahoma City driver registered the third quick time of the night, made it through his heat race, driving from eighth to fourth and then won the 25-lap main event, garnering 487 points for Saturday’s finale. The driver of the Liebig Racing #10 also cashed in $12,000 for his fifth win of the season here at the “Sprint Car Capital of the World.” Sheldon Haudenschild banked the second most points with his third place finish, and Corey Day was the hard-charger in the feature, and had the third highest point total (full point standings below).

The feature began with Justin Peck leading from outside row one, ahead of Garet Williamson, Timms, who charged from eighth, Lucas Wolfe and Chris Windom. Timms stormed by Williamson for second on lap two. Haudenschild made a move from sixth to fourth on lap three, and then passed Williamson for third on lap six.

Timms slowly reeled in Peck and stayed within striking distance before sliding in front of him entering turn one on the tenth lap. The leaders entered lapped traffic before Kaleb Johnson flipped hard in turn one, bringing out the red flag. He walked away from the crash.

Timms led Peck, Haudenschild, Haudenschild, Williamson and Windom back to green. Emerson Axsom entered the top five on the restart. Though there wasn’t much changeup front the last 14 laps, Corey Day and Rico Abreu were charging after coming from the back of the pack and the B main, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively.

Timms won by over a second over Peck, Haudenschild, Williamson and Axsom. Sam Hafertepe Jr., Day, Abreu, Windom and Austin McCarl completed the top ten. Abreu set quick time over the 51-car field, while Tanner Holmes, Johnson, Landon Crawley, Chris Martin and Blake Hahn won the heats.

2019 Knoxville Nationals champion, David Gravel, came out very late in qualifying, but laid down the fourth quick time of the night. Unfortunately, he crashed on the first lap of his heat after contact with another car. He came back to win the C, and drove from 21st to eighth in a B main won by Abreu. Kasey Jedrzejek was also a flip victim in the heats. He also walked away.

“That’s awesome,” said Timms in Victory Lane. “I don’t even know what to say! This thing is so fast. I just got a really good start there and kind of was able to hunt them down. What a night. That one was for Sam Liebig, who passed away not too long ago (January). Man, this is just great. I can easily say this is the biggest crowd I’ve ever won in front of. You don’t get any better feeling than right now.”

“We showed up Sunday and we were terrible,” said the second place Peck. “We were way too tight today, but I was confident in what we had going on. We understood the changes we were making, and figured it out from there. All in all, we hit it on the setup come feature time. Unfortunately, part way through that race, the engine kind of started to lay down. Once Ryan got in front of me, it was pretty much smooth sailing for him. I feel we have a good package for a dry track or a track like that.”

“The first few laps there were major,” said Haudenschild. “I got to the outside of the 7s and had Lucas there. I had to throw a pretty good slider on Lucas and just get going. I had to get by the 23, and I knew he was good. It’s probably the best I’ve ever felt at Knoxville. Without that yellow, I think I was the only one running the bottom. I was kind of waiting for traffic, and after that caution, it got strung out around there.”
