Can Atlantic Series survive without Champ Car When the dust settled in the so called Champ Car Indy Racing league merger the Mazda Atlantic Series was left out alone. For years the series had been the feeder series for Champ Car giving drivers like Dan Wheldon Katherine Legge and Buddy Rice theor first chances at open wheel racing. The series was owned by Champ Car however it must have been kept separate because it was not part of the merger. The Atlantic series which ran the majority of the races in conjunction with Champ Car now are finding themselves running alone at the venues. With Champ Car no longer where are these up and coming open wheel drivers going to go. The Indy Racing League has the pro series which for some reason has grown by leaps and bounds in 08 however there is still a very strong field competing in the series. Some of these drivers may be the future of open wheel racing however with no series to feed into they may return to the countries they have come from and never be heard from again. If I owned the series I would develope a low cost open wheel series and then stand to my ideals. I would first find an engine manufactur that would develop me an engine that would be cost efficent for the teams .I would keep race teams from tweaking the engines to gain performance or any other type of advantage. I know this can be done because back in 02 engine packages for the Indy Racing League was costing less than $250,000 for the entire season. Now the IRL participants are paying that much for Indianapolis alone. There would be no factory teams for special motors everyone would get idenical motors on race day. Second I would find a chassis manufacturer to develop a low cost chassis that could be used for two to three years however be updated yearly within a costly manner. The specifications would be so close no special adjustments could be made without them being seen during pre and post inspections. Does this sound familiar? It probably does the only thing I would do different is stand my ground to big dollar companies coming in and trying to tell me how to run my racing series like some have. I would have a low cost open wheel series and then the open wheel war could begin again. However in round two I would keep the costs to participate down and if teams wanted to come race in the series they would race on my terms where they did not raise the bar so high other teams would get out because they could not compete. Look at this the people involved in the Atlantic series you could modify your series now bring the costs down make the racing exciting and get teams involved that go not have the bucks to compete in the IRL or Pro Series. I would keep the series so cost efficent that teams would be lining up to join the series. Drivers competing in Mazda Atkantic Series 2008 Remaining Schedule
