Caution Ends Any Chance At Solid Qualifying Run for Gurney and GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing At Sahlen's Six Hours Of The Glen

Lack of A Green Flag Qualifying Attempt Puts No. 99 GAINSCO Pontiac Riley 16th

WATKINS GLEN, NY (June 6, 2008) — A qualifying session that really wasn't for Alex Gurney and GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing will see the team start a disappointing 16th in Saturday's Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen after an early off-course incident by another race car forced the session to end under caution.

Gurney was on his first and ultimately only flying lap just minutes into qualifying when Ricardo Zonta in the No. 76 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola went off track in Turn 8. Gurney quickly dove into the pits in order to be first out when the 15-minute session resumed, but that never happened as time expired before the incident scene could be cleared.

"We were all super frustrated that we didn't get to qualify," said Gurney after the No. 99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance Pontiac Riley was second fastest in both of Friday's practice sessions.  "We got half a lap, so I guess that was just the way the schedule fell.  It's disappointing but it is a six-hour event so it doesn't matter that much, but I definitely felt we had a good chance at the pole.  We were on a very quick lap so it is disappointing to say the least."

The No. 99 GAINSCO Pontiac Riley wasn't the only frontrunner that was caught out in Friday's truncated qualifying session.  The championship-leading No. 01 TELMEX/Chip Ganassi Racing Lexus Riley of Scott Pruett and the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Ford Riley of Oswaldo Negri Jr. were also foiled by the early end and will start 17th and 18th, respectively, behind Gurney in the GAINSCO race car.

"We got the short end of it today," Fogarty said.  "Like Alex said, it's a six-hour race and the start isn't that important.  They don't pay points for qualifying, but it is unfortunate for Alex because he only gets to qualify three times in the season.  This was one of them and he had a car, I think, and the ability to be on pole, but it looks like he will have to wait until September in Salt Lake City."

Gurney and Fogarty and the No. 99 GAINSCO team are the defending winners of the Sahlen's Six Hour which starts tomorrow at 11:15 a.m. ET.  Live coverage on SPEED starts with the first two hours of the race at 11 a.m. ET and continues from 2:30 p.m. ET to the finish later on Saturday.
