There’s No Place
Like Home for Crawley!
Takes
First Lucas Oil ASCS Win of the Year at I-30
Lonnie Wheatley, LITTLE ROCK, Ark.
(August 28, 2010) – “Home field
advantage” is a term generally reserved
for the stick-and-ball sorts, but Tim
Crawley offered up some solid evidence
that home-track advantage can definitely
come into play in Saturday night’s
35-lap Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N
Filters main event at I-30 Speedway.
Racing just a few short miles from his
Benton, AR, home, the three-time ASCS
National champion read some tricky track
conditions to perfection and then
battled past Brady Bacon on the 13th
round en route to his first Lucas Oil
ASCS National win of the year aboard
Mike Ward’s McCarver-powered Boater
Sports/Southern Renovations No. 88
Maxim.
“We’ve been needing this,” Crawley
commented before a raucous, near
capacity crowd in victory lane.
“To do this here in front of all
of y’all, it’s all good.”
The non-stop affair marked the second
time in three events thus far in 2010
that the Lucas Oil ASCS National Sprint
Cars have completed the 35-lap distance
atop I-30 Speedway’s high-banked, clay
oval in caution-free fashion.
Had Crawley expected another non-stop
feature event?
“Definitely not,” he answered.
More pressing in pre-race strategy was
the precise setup that could potentially
lead to victory lane over the stout
45-car field of entries.
“That was the big deal before the
feature started and that’s why you
keeping seeing us all coming out here
looking,” Crawley explained.
“It’s a crapshoot; it’s kinda
like rolling the dice.
We tightened the car way up so if
it would have took rubber, I would have
probably went backwards.”
There was no rubber though, and Crawley
had the field covered for his 40th
career ASCS National triumph and moved
past Zach Chappell for fifth in the
series $60,000 championship points
chase. “We made the
right guess and it worked out,” Crawley
surmised.
While Crawley started the feature
outside the second row, it was the
Oklahoma duo of
Darren Stewart and Bacon leading
the way to the green flag.
Bacon, a Lucas Oil ASCS winner at
I-30 in June, gunned into the lead at
the outset with Crawley moving past
Stewart for second in the early rounds.
Crawley went to work on Bacon for the
lead in short order, with Crawley
sliding past Bacon for the lead in turns
one and two on the eighth circuit only
to have Bacon return the favor in the
next pair of corners.
But, with Crawley dialed in on
some familiar turf as traffic came into
play, it was just a matter of time
before Bacon would leave an opening wide
enough for Crawley to bust through.
He found that opening soon after and
edged ahead upon the completion of the
13th circuit.
Leaving Bacon behind to dice for
second with Darren Stewart and
Jason Johnson over the remaining
distance, Crawley gradually slipped away
in the ensuing rounds and worked with
precision through heavy traffic
throughout to secure the victory.
In Crawley’s wake, Bacon prevailed
aboard the Wesmar-powered Tel-Star
Communications No. 99 Triple-X in the
intense battle for runner-up honors.
Bacon held off current series
points leader Johnson’s JJR Don Ott-powered
Haynes No. 41 Maxim, who settled for
third after finally working past Darren
Stewart on the 27th circuit.
Making just his third start of the year
aboard the Sparks Construction No. 91,
Stewart was a close fourth, while
two-time Short Track Nationals champion
Tony Bruce, Jr., picked off his first
top-five finish aboard the Bruce Racing
No. 18 Maxim since the series last stop
at I-30 in June.
Ohio’s Darren Long posted his best
finish of the year by racing to sixth,
with Jeff Swindell rallying from 18th
to seventh. Ricky
Logan was eighth, with Gary Wright and
Justin Sturch completing the top ten.
Connecticut contender David Gravel
finished out his first weekend of Lucas
Oil ASCS National competition just one
spot out of the top ten in eleventh,
while reigning series champion Shane
Stewart charged from 23rd to
12th after using a
provisional to start the main event.
Johnson, Long, Channin Tankersley, Matt
Covington and Sturch topped heat race
action, with Cody Gardner and Swindell
winning the twin 12-lap “B” Mains.
Jerod Roller smacked the wall exiting
turn four and flipped four laps into the
night’s opening heat race, while Rick
Pringle got upside down as well in the
second heat race.
Both were uninjured but done for the
night.

Howland Survives Scare for ASCS Patriot
Win at Stateline
Rich Vleck, JAMESTOWN, N.Y. (August 28,
2010) - In baseball,
Reggie Jackson was dubbed “Mr.
October” for his late-season
performances. In the Patriot Region,
Bryan Howland’s late-season excellence
could earn him the title “Mr. August.”
Howland, of
Auburn, NY, capitalized on a
slight bobble by Tim Kelly on lap 18 to
take the lead and drive away to score
his fourth ASCS Patriot win of the
season to capture the Insinger Race
Fuels King of the
Southern Tier Crown while
strengthening his championship point
lead in the process. Already the only
driver to win multiple Patriot features
at Stateline, Howland would win on the
final Saturday in August for the third
year in a row on the NY/PA Stateline.
Before the three-time series champion
claimed the win at the high-banked
1/3-mile he would have to narrowly
escape an incident with 19 laps
completed to put his Filtrec
Corporation No. 51 Maxim in
Victory Lane.
Don Adamczyk jumped into the lead on the
opening lap of the 25-lap A-Main, but
Tim Kelly would use the bottom line
coming off turn four to lead the second
lap. Howland would move into second the
next lap but would take a few laps to
close in on Kelly’s No. 12.
Howland began to apply pressure just
before the first caution flag of the
race flew on lap 11 for Kyle Moffit
spinning in turn three. Howland was
primarily on the top of the track, while
Kelly was on the bottom. Even though
the momentum was greater on the top, the
cushion in turn four was so high that
Kelly would prevail each time they
crossed the start/finish line to
complete another lap.
“I knew Tim had a good car because he
started in the same row as me and got to
the lead so quick,” Howland said after
the race.
On the lap 12 restart, Howland began to
pressure Kelly each turn of each lap;
still it was the No. 12 pulled ahead
each lap. On lap 18 though, Kelly
slipped up off the bottom in turn two
and as he searched for the bite Howland
had enough of a run to not only get
ahead of Kelly, but shut the door in the
next set of corners to eliminate the
chance of any instant rebuttal.
The next lap, the top two came out of
turn two and saw Bob Reis’ No. 4 slowing
in the middle of the backstretch.
Howland went to go to the outside of
Reis to avoid him, but with the
hole closing would get squeezed into the
wall. Since he did not stop though, he
would be able to reassume his spot out
front.
On the ensuing restart, Howland went
back to the top of turns three and four,
which was exactly what Kelly and Jared
Zimbardi wanted to see, as they dove to
the inside and nearly stole the lead
away. The next lap around, Howland went
back to the bottom and not only
protected the line, but began to drove
away.
“Once I got around Tim, I thought I
could drive away but he kept coming back
to the inside,” added Howland after the
race. “I knew I had to do something
different.”
In what was his 18th career
ASCS Patriot Win, the 23-year-old put
together some veteran moves to assure
his win. For a four lap series after
acquiring the lead, Howland mixed up the
line he would take in each corner and
kept the veteran Kelly guessing. It
paid off as Kelly could not set up a
guaranteed run to take the lead back.
By the time the
checkered flags fell, Howland had
built up a healthy advantage to pick up
the win.
In addition to the win, Howland locked
up his second crown of the season.
Entering the night, all he had to do was
finish in the top-five to do so but that
was not the focus once the feature
began.
The win was not without disappointment
for the Howland team though, as the
contact with Bob Reis and the wall on
lap 19 resulted in a damaged rear end.
For the third straight year now, Howland
has taken a tight point battle with
Jared Zimbardi at the beginning of
August and all but sewn it up with
consistent top runs and plenty of wins.
Tim Kelly’s second-place finish was
bittersweet at the site of his last two
A-Main wins seven and eight years ago.
In scoring his seventh-straight top-10
finish, the
Rock Stream, NY driver perhaps
came the closest he ever has to his
long-awaited first win on the Patriot
tour. It was his fifth runner-up
showing in the last 13 months.
“I can’t complain. We had a good run,”
said the modest Kelly after the race.
“We always seem to run good here and we
had a good setup tonight.”
Jared Zimbardi’s first attempt with a
new shock package put him in the mix
after winning his heat and finished
third for his best Patriot showing since
July 3. “The Juice” had a strong run on
the lap 12 restart on Howland for second
but spent the next six laps engaged in a
terrific battle with Bubba Broderick for
third.
Zimbardi again made a bid for the lead
on the lap 19 restart on the bottom and
would spend the final five laps stalking
Kelly’s No. 12 for second.
Broderick, the June winner at Stateline,
drove up from his eighth place starting
spot to finish in fourth after fighting
hard to earn each spot.
Insinger Race Fuels
Rookie of the Year Contender
Dylan Swiernik made his first trip to
Victory Lane holding the
checkered flag as he won the Four
Laps of Fame Dash and utilized the track
time to run up to a top-five finish.
Jason Barney finished sixth in his first
Patriot start of the year in his first
trip to Stateline. Barney made a final
lap pass around early leader Don
Adamczyk for the spot as Adamczyk, who
won his National Parts Peddler Heat
Race, was seventh.
Kyle Moffit rallied from his spin to
finish in eighth while Todd Hoddick
recorded his best career Patriot finish
in ninth. Dave Wickham completed the
top-10 for the second time in his last
three starts.
The A-Main would have just two caution
periods. The only other stoppage on the
night was on lap one of the Four Laps of
Fame when Bob Reis got into Bruce DeWick,
sending DeWick’s car aimlessly into the
infield, where Brandan Warner would get
caught up in the incident.

Hull Handles
Lucas Oil ASCS at Tri-City!
Lonnie Wheatley,
PONTOON BEACH, Ill. (August 27,
2010) – Jerrod Hull took full advantage
of every little opportunity that
presented itself in Friday night’s
Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N
Filters National debut at Tri-City
Speedway to pull off a stunning upset
victory from the 19th
starting position.
The Sikeston, MO, shoe steered clear of
some opening lap carnage, snuck by some
battling contenders on the low side in
the middle portion of the race and then
took the lead away from Brian Brown on
the 21st circuit before
checking out in the
final rounds of the 30-lapper for
the $6,000 victory, his second career
ASCS National triumph and first since a
Benton, MO, win on July 4, 1996.
“I’m not believing this at all, I won
one of these races back in ’95 or
something, a long time ago,” Hull
explained in victory lane.
“We’ve tried a lot of times, this
is by far my biggest win.”
While Hull gridded the feature field
inside the tenth row after advancing
from “B” Main action, he picked up ten
spots before a lap was completed when
front row starters
Danny Wood and Matt Covington
tangled and flipped entering turn one,
collecting the likes of leading title
contenders
Jason Johnson and Shane Stewart
along with
Gary Wright, Justyn Cox, Dustin
Barks, Tim Crawley, Ricky Logan and
more.
When the mess was cleared and the field
reset, Hull restarted in ninth as only
Wood, Covington and Barks were unable to
make the call for the restart.
“It was close, I drove it in there and
seen ‘em piling up and we were able to
get it slowed down,” Hull explained of
the crash. “I was
amazed we restarted ninth.
That’s pretty cool we won it from
ninth though, they didn’t just give it
to us.”
With Hull working forward from the fifth
row aboard the
Heartland Trailer Manufacturing
No. 12 Maxim instead of the tenth row on
the second start, Brian Brown led the
way to the
green flag after originally
starting in sixth and gunned into the
early lead ahead of Darren Long.
While Brown apparently cruised out front
over the first half of the race, the
action in his wake was intense with wild
sliders for position in virtually every
corner amongst Long, Dustin Morgan, Kyle
Hirst and Brady Bacon among others.
While all that was going on, Hull found
some rubber on the low side of the track
and began working forward, getting
between the battling duo of Hirst and
Bacon for fourth by the midway point.
Hirst and Hull slid past Long for
second and third by the 19th
lap and then quickly closed the gap on
Brown, who had been struggling with a
sticking throttle throughout while out
front.
Hull raced past both Hirst and then
Brown for the lead on the 21st
lap, one round before the yellow flag
flew for Long, who spun to a stop in
turn one with a cut tire after battling
among the top positions throughout.
After Brown stopped with race-ending
woes three rounds later, Hull checked
out over the final six circuits to snare
the victory with a full straightaway
advantage over 13th-starter
Hirst, who posted a Lucas Oil ASCS
National career-best finish of second
aboard
Gary Perkins’ Shark-powered GP
Development No. 6 A.R.T.
“We’ll take it,” the Loomis, CA, shoe
that ranks as the leading Brodix
Rookie of the Year contender
commented afterward.
“That start got us a lot of spots and
then I found the rubber before the guys
up front did, but ol’ Jerrod Hull found
it way lower than I did and got by us
all.”
Fifteenth-starter Zach Chappell worked
forward over the final circuits to claim
the show position aboard David
Chappell’s Wesmar-powered Legend’s
Bar-B-Que No. 50z Maxim, while
three-time series champion Tim Crawley
rebounded from the opening lap melee to
claim fourth in Mike Ward’s McCarver-powered
Boater Sports No. 88 Maxim.
Brady Bacon rounded out the top five in
Mike and Megan Eubank’s Wesmar-powered
Tel-Star Communications No. 99 Triple-X,
with Jonathan Cornell crossing the
stripe in seventh.
Reigning series champion Shane Stewart
recovered from the opening lap incident
and then a lap eight spin in turn four
to finish seventh, with Dustin Morgan,
current Lucas Oil ASCS National points
leader Jason Johnson and Gary Wright
completing the top ten.
Brown, Long, Wood and Crawley topped
heat race action for the 38-car field,
with
Adam Jones and Mark Shirshekan
winning the twin “B” Mains.

NEWS & NOTES |
ASCS SOD Labors for
Bonus Honors at Winston
and Crystal
T.J. Buffenbarger,
TULSA, Okla. (August 30,
2010) - The Engine Pro
ASCS Sprints on Dirt
presented by ARP spends
Labor Day weekend
working the short tracks
at Winston Speedway and
Crystal
Motor Speedway
for the series final
appearance at both
tracks during the 2010
season. Along with the
tight battle for the
points lead for the
overall series
championship between
Ryan Grubaugh and Gregg
Dalman, there are other
honors at stake.
Both events at Winston
and Crystal mark an end
to the 2010 MAHLE/Clevite
Short Track challenge
series contested at
selected races on tracks
3/8-mile and shorter.
Davey Brown has used
consistency to take the
lead in the challenge by
virtue of his second
place finish last
Saturday at
Owendale Speedway.
Brown holds a 19 point
lead going into the
final weekend over
Dalman, who won last
Saturday’s feature at
Owendale.
Crystal’s feature will
also determine the ASCS
SOD representatives for
the 2010 Village Pizza
Ohsweken Shootout during
the upcoming Arrow
Express Canadian Sprint
Car Nationals at
Ohsweken Speedway.
The top two finishers in
the feature event will
receive guaranteed
starting spots in
Friday’s shootout.
Dalman closed the gap
for the overall ASCS SOD
championship to 49
points going into the
Labor Day events
at Winston and
Crystal. In the past
two events Dalman has
gained points on
Grubaugh, with both
drivers aiming for their
first ASCS SOD point
title. One driver that
hopes to spoil their
weekend plans is ASCS
SOD all time feature
winner Dustin Daggett,
who is expected to
return to competition
this weekend.
The Engine Pro ASCS
Sprints on Dirt
presented by ARP is in
its 31st season of
competition.
Twenty-seven races are
on the calendar
scheduled throughout
Michigan, Indiana, Ohio,
and Ontario.

ASCS Gulf South Set for Labor Day Weekend
Triple!
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (August
30, 2010) – The American Sprint Car
Series Gulf South Region will be in full
force action with a complete set of
three events in southeast Texas over
this Labor Day holiday weekend.
The weekend kicks off at Beaumont’s
Golden Triangle
Raceway Park on Friday night,
shifts to the
Gator Motorplex in Willis on
Saturday night and then wraps up at
Lufkin’s Speedarama Raceway on Sunday
night.
The triple could prove crucial in
Ray Allen Kulhanek’s drive for a
second ASCS Gulf South title, as the
Montgomery, TX, shoe carries a 120-point
advantage over Conroe’s Tommy Bryant
into the weekend.
Only a pair of events on September 17-18
remains after this weekend’s action.
Kulhanek, the 2005 ASCS Gulf South
champion, has reached victory lane on
just one occasion thus far in 2010, a
Gulf South vs. Lone Star tilt at
Waco’s Heart O’ Texas Speedway on
July 23. However,
ten top-five feature finishes in 15
events, more than double the number of
top-fives recorded by any of his title
challengers, has proved to be the
difference at the top of the point
charts.
Bryant, who picked off back-to-back wins
at Lufkin (May 30) and Beaumont (June
18), holds down second in points by just
43 points over two-time series champion
Brandon Berryman of Missouri City, TX,
with defending ASCS Gulf South champion
Aaron Reutzel a close fourth.
Travis Elliott of
Alvin, TX, rounds out the current
top five in points, with
Chris Sweeney (Channelview),
Scottie McDonald (New Caney), Wes Miller
(Santa Fe), Beau Smith (Texas City) and
Logan Bledsoe (Richmond, TX) the balance
of the top ten.
Friday’s card marks the sixth ASCS Gulf
South stop of the year at the
Golden Triangle Raceway Park.
Gary Wright has topped two of
five previous Beaumont features, with
Chris Morgan, Bryant and
Jason Johnson each posting single
wins.
Saturday marks the second stop of the
year at the Gator Motorplex, where Kent
Lewis, Jr., used a 23-year-old Gambler
Chassis to knock off the Gulf South
forces over Memorial Day weekend.
Sunday’s weekend finale marks the third
series stop of the year at the
Speedarama Raceway, where Jason Johnson
and Bryant have bagged Lufkin wins in
2010.
Friday’s action at Golden Triangle
Raceway Park fires off at 8:00 p.m.,
Saturday’s green flag at Gator flies at
7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s action at
Speedarama gets under way at 7:00 p.m.
Golden Triangle Raceway Park is located
9.5 miles west of I-10 on US 90 near
Beaumont, TX.
For more information, contact the track
at
409-752-7200.
The Gator Motorplex is located in
Willis, TX, off I-45 Exit 98 (Shepherd
Hill exit), then east, then 1.4 miles
south on SR 75. For
more information, contact the track at
936-588-6127.
Speedarama Raceway is located east of
Lufkin, TX, on SR 103, just one
mile east of Loop 287.
For more information, contact the
track at
936-328-7571.
The ASCS Gulf South Region has completed
15 nights of racing action at seven
different tracks throughout Texas in
2010 with just five nights of action
remaining. Another
seven nights have been lost to rain.

ASCS Canyon Region Ready for Hank Arnold
Memorial at USA Raceway!
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (August
30, 2010) – With the worst of the
Arizona desert heat presumably in
the books, the wingless forces of the
American Sprint Car Series Canyon Region
return to action for a pair of nights
this weekend at
Tucson’s USA Raceway.
The ASCS Canyon Region takes to the
3/8-mile USA Raceway clay oval for the
annual
Hank Arnold Memorial, which
includes two full nights of competition
on Saturday and Sunday.
Leading the way into the weekend is
Buckeye’s Charles Davis, Jr., who is
vying for a second consecutive series
championship after winning five of the
series initial ten feature events of the
year.
Davis carries a 142-point advantage into
the weekend over two-time series
champion Jeremy Sherman, who holds a
slight advantage over the likes of Mike
Martin, R.J. Johnson and Josh Pelkey in
a tight battle for second in points.
The balance of the current top ten in
ASCS Canyon points includes Andrew
Reinbold, Ronnie Clark, Dalten Gabbard,
Brian Hosford and
Justin Quinn.
Rick Ziehl is the defending Hank Arnold
Memorial after topping the first edition
of the event held at USA Raceway last
September. The
previous year, Andrew Reinbold snapped a
streak of four Jeremy Sherman wins in
the Arnold Memorial by topping the final
Arnold event at Manzanita.
Racing action on both Saturday and
Sunday at USA Raceway is slated to go
green at 6:45 p.m.
The 3/8-mile USA Raceway clay oval is
located east of Tucson off I-10 Exit
268, then 1.6 mile south on Craycroft
Road, which turns into Los Reales.
For more information, contact the
track at
520-574-8515.
The ASCS Canyon Region is currently
slated for 18 overall nights of
competition in 2010, including 13 nights
in Arizona, a two-night Fourth of July
weekend in New Mexico and pair of trips
to California’s
Perris Auto Speedway.
In its 19th year of
sanctioning Sprint Car racing, the
American Sprint Car Series brings the
best of Sprint Car racing to
approximately 100 different tracks
throughout 30 states and Canada.
Anchored by the
Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series
