Gregg Grabs Fifth ASCS Southwest Win Saturday at USA

Lonnie Wheatley, TUCSON, Ariz. (June 28, 2008) – Ben Gregg captured his fifth American Sprint Car Series Southwest Region feature win of the season by topping Saturday night's 25-lap feature at United Sports Arizona Race Park.

With the triumph aboard the RPM-powered Mastercraft Boats No. 22b Maxim, Gregg extended his point lead to 48 markers over Shawn Sander.

Sander paced the field over the early portion of the race before Gregg took command.  Fending off Rick Ziehl over the final portion of the race, Gregg ultimately lapped up to fifth place.

Gregg and Ziehl were chased to the stripe by Sander, with Billy Chester III and Steve Martin rounding out the top five.  Cody Cambensy was sixth, with Joshua Williams, John Van Horn, Jessica Van Dyke and Steve Stone completing the top ten.

Ziehl, Van Horn and Gregg each claimed heat race victories.

Herrera Shines at Hollywood Hills with ASCS Rocky Mountain Sweep

Lonnie Wheatley, SAN FELIPE PUEBLO, N.M. (June 28, 2008) – Albuquerque's Johnny Herrera completed a sweep of the weekend's American Sprint Car Series Rocky Mountain Region double at Hollywood Hills Speedway by wiring the field in Saturday night's 30-lap feature.

With the victory and his second ASCS Rocky Mountain Region weekend sweep of the year, Herrera has now reached victory lane in his last nine ASCS Rocky Mountain Region starts within the state of New Mexico, dating back to 2005.

Originally slated to start fourth, Herrera slid up to the front row outside when slated second-starter Tim West was forced pitside with mechanical ills.

Herrera then outgunned pole starter Scott Box for the point at the drop of the green and was never headed despite several cautions along the way.

Herrera took the checkered flag in front of James High, with Box taking the show position.  Derrik Ortega reclaimed the series points lead by finishing fourth, with Jerry Brey rounding out the top five.

Jeremy McCune advanced seven positions to finish sixth, with Billy Page, Bud Goodwin, Paul Whitehead and Scott Milan completing the top ten.

After entering the night atop the point charts, Chad Corken finished 13th after experiencing fuel system issues and left the night eight points in arrears to Ortega.

Page, Bob Schaeffer and Corken won Saturday night's heat races, with Jesse Baker victorious in the "B" Main.

Adams Tops ASCS Regional Clash at Southern Raceway

Lonnie Wheatley, MILTON, Fla. (June 28, 2008) – Kenny Adams raced into the lead with just a handful of laps remaining to capture his fourth American Sprint Car Series Regional win of the year in Saturday night's 25-lap ASCS Coastal vs. Rebel Region main event at Southern Raceway.

Adams wrestled the lead away from Frank Beck III on the 20th circuit en route to capturing the $2,000 triumph aboard the Don Ott-powered B&W Trucking/CnB Mushrooms No. 4m Shaw.

Beck gunned into the lead from the pole position at the drop of the green and led the early stages in front of Samantha Taylor.  Current ASCS Coastal Region points leader Don Young surged past both Adams and Taylor to take over second at the midway point, only to slip off the track soon after.

Adams assumed second position and then took the lead away from Beck on the 20th lap.  Beck settled for second, with Taylor claiming the show position.  Lane Whittington was fourth, with Red Stauffer rounding out the top five.

Bryn Gohn and Beck topped heat race action.

Daggett Takes First ASCS SOD Win of the Year in I-96 Shootout

T.J. Buffenbarger, LAKE ODESSA, Mich. (June 28, 2008) – Dustin Daggett captured the final leg of the North/South Shootout between the Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by Victor Reinz and the EFI-National Racing Alliance on Saturday during the Full Throttle Nationals at I-96 Speedway.

Daggett passed Sean Robinson for the lead and held off Darren Long during a last lap restart for the feature victory in the Mott Motorsports’ Gaerte powered Maxim chassis.

“The top of the race track was really nice, and there wasn’t many people up there at the start of the race,” said Daggett in victory lane.  “The battle with Sean (Robinson) for the lead was a lot of fun.”

Joe Bares and Louie Carufel started on the front row for the 25-lap feature event.  Carufel pulled out to a commanding lead with Sean Robinson quickly moving into the second spot.  Then with seven laps completed Chad Gullett broke the jacobs ladder on his car and flipped hard in turn three.  Gullett was uninjured, but while taking evasive action to miss Gullett’s flipped racer the leader Carufel complained of back pain and retired from the event for treatment.

Robinson inherited the lead with Daggett, who started seventh, right behind him for the restart.  Robinson and Daggett ran side by side for a pair of laps before Daggett used a slide job in turn for to take over the lead.

Meanwhile eighth starting Long began to pick up momentum and disposed of Robinson for second and set out after Daggett for the lead.  Daggett had built up a sizeable advantage until the caution appeared with one lap to go for a spin in turn two by the outside front row starter Bares.  This set up a one lap shootout on the restart with Long on Daggett’s back bumper.  Daggett was up to the challenge though and captured the win over Long, J.R. Stewart, Ryan Grubaugh from 13th, and Robinson.

Robinson, Beares, and Tim Allison won heat race events.  Naida won the Total Seal/Gaerte Engines Fast Car Dash, and Tim Norman won the Engine Pro B-Main event.

ASCS Patriots Rainstruck at Stateline for Second Straight Saturday

Rich Vleck, JAMESTOWN, NY (June 28, 2008) - With a solid field on hand and double features on the card, racing was set to get started at the Stateline Speedway, but the passing shower hit the 1/3-mile facility squarely and forced yet another postponement.

The double feature program, including the make-up 25 lapper, will now be run on Saturday August 23rd to couple up with Humberstone for a late-season swing.

The ASCS Patriots now turn their attention to the ASCS Northern Summer Nationals at the Ohsweken Speedway this Friday and Saturday as part of a co-sanctioned weekend with the ASCS Sprints on Dirt.  For more information, visit www.ASCSracing.com

Late Move Nets Jason Johnson ASCoT Loot at Huron!

Lonnie Wheatley, HURON, S.D. (June 28, 2008) – The annual ASCS Northern Swing ended in spectacular fashion on Saturday night as Jason Johnson nabbed his sixth O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National victory of the year with a late move in traffic to top the 25-lap feature event at Dakota State Fair Speedway.

Johnson snared the point from race-long leader Garry Lee Maier on the 23rd lap and then fought off Maier as well as Wayne Johnson over the final two circuits to claim his 34th career ASCS National Tour feature win aboard Lanny Row's Wesmar-powered The Shop Motorsports/Custom Equipment Design No. 41 Eagle.

Maier and Jason Johnson led the feature field to the green flag, with Maier gunning into the early lead and pacing the early rounds aboard Scott Brown's ASI-powered Lubbock Wrecker Service No. 11x Maxim.

The initial ASCS National champion never could rest easy though, as Jason Johnson kept the pressure on throughout.  In fact, Johnson briefly took the lead away from Maier on the ninth lap when he slid into the top spot in turns one and two.  Maier wasted little time returning the favor however, racing back into the lead a half lap later in turns three and four.

While Maier and Jason Johnson diced for the point, Wayne Johnson was on the move from the eighth position in Mike Hammers' H&H Enterprises No. 94 Maxim.  The 2000 ASCS National champion needed just two laps to climb to fourth and had taken third from 2001 champ Zach Chappell by the time the race's final caution flew with eleven laps in the books.

With Maier setting the pace ahead of the pair of unrelated Johnson's, action simmered to a boil as lapped traffic once again became a factor over the final seven circuits.

The slightest of hesitations in traffic by Maier on the 23rd lap was all Jason Johnson needed to scoot into the lead.  But with a pair of lapped cars directly in front of the battling lead trio as the white flag flew, the victory wasn't in the bag yet.

With Maier and Wayne Johnson side-by-side and right on Jason Johnson's tailtank exiting turn two on the final lap, "The Ragin' Cajun" split the pair of lapped cars in a mad dash down the backstretch and into the final pair of corners to essentially put the win away.

Jason Johnson flashed under the checkered flag with a two car-length advantage for his second ASCoT win in as many tries at Dakota State Fair Speedway, as Maier nipped Wayne Johnson at the line for runner-up honors.  Wayne Johnson settled for show honors, with four-time and reigning series champion Gary Wright climbing from 12th to finish fourth in the Wesmar-powered Richwood Construction No. 9 Maxim.  Wright escaped the Northern Swing with a  22-point advantage over Jason Johnson in the series $50,000 championship chase.

Leading Brodix Rookie of the Year contender Eric Baldaccini posted his second fifth-place finish in as many South Dakota starts over the week in the Smiley's Race Products No. B4 Maxim, with Zach Chappell next across the stripe in sixth.  Minnesota's Gordy Vogelaar claimed seventh, with Jody Rosenboom, Chad Meyer and Kenneth Walker completing the top ten.

After holding down the fifth position over the first half of the race, Jack Dover retired to the infield with mechanical woes after 14 laps.  The Dover team had already changed engines following a second-place heat race finish.

After coming to a stop with one lap in the books, Shawn Van Wyhe exited four laps later to become the race's first casualty.

The second and final caution flew after eleven laps when Dave Glennon's mount went up in smoke.  Kathryne Minter and Chuck Swenson retired to the pit area under the ensuing caution period.  Earlier, Swenson had surrendered his seventh starting position when he required a second push as the feature field aligned.

Wayne Johnson, Chappell and Jason Johnson topped Saturday night's heat race action.

Brian Brown Tops ASCS Midwest at McCool Junction

Lonnie Wheatley, McCOOL JUNCTION, Neb. (June 27, 2008) – Brian Brown continued his mastery of the 3/8-mile Junction Motor Speedway by racing to victory lane in Friday night's 25-lap American Sprint Car Series Midwest Region feature event.

The victory aboard Tim and Gina Doogs' Wesmar-powered Super Clean No. 21 Maxim marked Brown's tenth career ASCS Midwest Region score and the third time in as many years that the Missouri racer has topped the series' June event at Junction Motor Speedway.

After starting fourth, Brown took the lead from front row outside starter Jay Russell on the third lap and led the rest of the way in the non-stop affair, beating 18-year-old Jack Dover to the checkered flag.

Reigning ASCS Northern Plains Region champion Lee Grosz claimed the show position after starting from the pole, with Russell and Mike Chadd rounding out the top five.

Don Droud, Jr., was sixth, with Mike Boston, defending ASCS Midwest Region champion Natalie Sather, Justin Henderson and Gregg Bakker completing the top ten.

Droud, Dover and Grosz topped heat race action.

Two in a Row for Wood with ASCS Sooner Score at KSP

Lonnie Wheatley, KENNEDALE, Texas (June 27, 2008) – Joe Wood, Jr., reeled off his second consecutive American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region feature win by charging to victory lane in Friday night's 25-lap main event in the series first appearance at Kennedale Speedway Park.

After collecting his first career ASCS feature win two weekends ago, Wood took advantage of Brian McClelland's early misfortune to post triumph number two aboard the Wesmar-powered J&W Oilfield Services/Signfxr No. 03 Maxim.

While Wood started the feature from the second row, current series point leader McClelland paced the opening rounds.  But when his right rear tire went flat on a lap five restart, McClelland was relegated to the pit area and a 17th-place finish.

Wood assumed the lead and never looked back, taking the checkered flag in front of Johnny Miler, with Matt Covington, Gary Taylor and Marvin Lough rounding out the top five.

Kevin Ramey was sixth, with Skip Wilson, Kolt Walker, 16th-starter Trey Robb and Michael Brown completing the top ten.

Travis Rilat, Miller, McClelland and Lough topped heat race action for the 31-car field, with Jerry Bell and Robb winning the twin "B" Mains.

The ASCS Sooner Region makes the voyage across the parking lot to Cowtown Speedway on Saturday night to complete the weekend double in Kennedale, TX.

Chuck Hebing Defies Disaster To Score ASCS Patriot Win at Ransomville

Rich Vleck, RANSOMVILLE, N.Y. (June 27, 2008) - There was a fine ribbon of real estate on the top of the Ransomville Speedway on Friday night that separated hero and zero; Chuck Hebing kept his No. 28 on the right side of that equation and scored his second-straight ASCS Patriot win.

Hebing, of Ontario, NY, snatched the lead from defending Ransomville winner Jared Zimbardi on a lap 19 restart and ran away from the pack to collect the ransom at “The Big R”.

“Jared was going really good on the bottom and I knew I had to go to the top to pass him,” said the “Cobra”.  “A few times there I got really close to the wall but especially in turns 1 and 2 that was where I was the fastest.”

After winning his first National Parts Peddler Heat of 2008, “The Cobra” started in sixth after a poor redraw but did not waste much time moving forward.  On the second lap he went three-wide around two cars to move into fourth and then threaded the needle coming off the next set of corners.

During a red flag period on lap four for a Curt Sherwood flip, Hebing slid the wing of his Bud Burlew-owned ‘Junkyard Dog’ No. 28 all the way back to compensate for his loose handling race car.  That was the just the tweak the defending series Champion needed to continue his march forward.

Hebing jumped into second on a lap nine restart but seemed to be slower than Jared Zimbardi, who defeated Cobra in the same event last season.  On multiple occasions he came within a foot of the turn two wall and allowed Zimbardi to stretch his advantage.  After the halfway point though, he would cut the gap, and on lap 19 that he would get a strong enough run to capture the lead.

“Zimbardi was right there for the win tonight,” said Hebing in Victory Lane.  “After I got around him I went down to the bottom cause I knew the way his car was that was where he had to run.”

The win was Hebing’s 30th in a points paying ASCS Patriot event.  It was his second win in as many attempts in the No. 28.  Chuck quipped in Victory Lane, “I hope Bud (Burlew) doesn’t fire me.”

Zimbardi’s second place run was the second-straight finish behind Hebing.  It helped him to continue gaining on the points lead though as the season continues in high gear.  Zimbardi took the lead from Scott Kreutter on lap 6 but fought a loose condition in the late stages to surrender the lead.

Tim Kelly started third and would finish there, but in between would fade as far back as eighth before charging back up by using a daredevil line on the top of the speedway similar to Hebing.

The Breen Brothers rounded out the top-five with Blake hanging around his fourth place finishing position for most of the race by running the bottom of the ½-mile.  Bobby had to come from farther back, winning the Pro-Syn Oil Technology Four Laps of Fame, which started him in ninth.  He was running in eighth with two laps remaining, when he too found that fine line on the top of the track and flew up to finish in fifth.

Scott Kreutter faded with a loose car to finish in sixth, just edging out point leader Bryan Howland, who won NPP Heat No. 3.  John Schuyler, Don Adamczyk and Mike Stelter completed the top-10.

A total of 25 cars were in the pit area on a beautiful summer night.  Four cars would not be able to make it to the feature though as Joe August Jr. crashed hard in hot laps, Robbie Shuttleworth and Canadian Craig Downie flipped in their heats and Bruce Dewick broke a coupler.

Scott Bonnell, who was the KSE Hard Charger on the night, was set to get into the Top-8 Redraw when his fuel line went on the No. 3B, sending him pitside a lap early.

Herrera Hauls in ASCS Rocky Mountain Prelim at Hollywood Hills

Lonnie Wheatley, SAN FELIPE PUEBLO, N.M. (June 27, 2008) – Johnny Herrera racked up his third American Sprint Car Series Rocky Mountain Region victory of the season by topping Friday night's 25-lap feature at Hollywood Hills Speedway.

Starting the feature event inside the second row, Herrera wasted little time disposing of front row starters Jody Williams and Jerry Brey as he snared the lead on the opening round.

Herrera survived several cautions in the early laps and then distanced himself from early chaser Chad Corken en route to taking his eighth career ASCS Rocky Mountain Region victory by nearly a straightaway margin.

Rick Ziehl crossed the stripe second, with Scott Box taking the show position.  James High raced from 15th to finish fourth, with Tim West rounding out the top five.

Corken maintained a slim point lead by finishing sixth, one position ahead of chief title contender Derrik Ortega, who advanced a dozen positions from his 19th starting position.  Colt Treharn raced from 17th to eighth, with Jeff Heffner and Billy Page completing the top ten.

Brey, Box, Ziehl and Dustin Hall topped heat race action for Friday night's 30-car field, with Treharn winning the "B" Main.

Young Prevails in ASCS Regional Clash at Northwest Florida

Lonnie Wheatley, BAKER, Fla. (June 27, 2008) – Don Young captured his first career American Sprint Car Series feature win by topping Friday night's 25-lap ASCS Coastal vs. Rebel Region main event at Northwest Florida Speedway.

The 19-year-old Bartlett, TN, racer gunned into the lead at the outset and was never headed as he collected the victory aboard Cliff Young's DynoTech-powered Patton Classic Cars/Pro Auto No. 75 J&J.

Young, the current ASCS Coastal Region points leader, fought off ASCS Rebel contenders Matt Tiffany and Kenny Adams for the victory, with Bryn Gohn and Red Stauffer rounding out the top five in the non-stop feature event.

Tiffany and Gohn topped heat race action.

***Bruce Bags O'Reilly ASCoT Honors at I-90 Speedway!

Lonnie Wheatley, HARTFORD, S.D. (June 24, 2008) – Tony Bruce, Jr., of Liberal, KS, notched his second O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National feature win of the season by posting a wire-to-wire victory in Tuesday night's 25-lap main event to conclude the second leg of the ASCS Northern Swing at I-90 Speedway.

Bruce battled into the lead on the opening lap and then fought off several bids from Gary Wright along the way to secure the win aboard the Kistler-powered Best Well Service No. 18 Maxim.

Gridding the field inside the second row, Bruce emerged from an opening lap scramble for the point in front of second-starter Wright and polesitter Aaron Berryhill, with Brodix Rookie of the Year contender Eric Baldaccini soon making his way around Berryhill for third.

With Wright pressuring Bruce for the lead, action came to a quick halt on the fifth lap when Bryan Dobesh flipped wildly in turn four and took down a portion of the fence in the process.  Dobesh escaped injury, while the track crew made quick repairs to the fence.

"On that restart, I was thinking about Gary Wright passing me on the last lap at Devil's Bowl," Bruce commented, alluding to the final night of the Devil's Bowl Spring Nationals in March.  "I couldn't let that happen again, I had to keep him behind me."

Wright turned up the heat soon after the restart, pulling even on the low side of turns one and two on the seventh lap only to have Bruce power back in front as they charged down the backstretch.

Bruce adeptly worked his way through lapped traffic over the final 15 circuits, opening up a half dozen car-length advantage over Wright, who was busy fending off Sam Hafertepe, Jr., over the final half of the race.

"I saw his nose under me a time or two and knew I had to get my elbows up," Bruce explained.  "That old guy is still awful tough to beat."

Bidding for a fifth consecutive series crown, Wright gained some valuable points with his runner-up finish aboard the Wesmar-powered Richwood Construction No. 9 Maxim.

Hafertepe battled past Baldaccini for third by the midway point and battled with Wright before settling for the show position in the G-H Plumbing No. 15.  Zach Chappell made a late move to snare fourth in the Legend's Bar-B-Que No. 50z Maxim, while Baldaccini posted a career best ASCoT National finish of fifth aboard the Smiley's Race Products No. B4 Maxim.

Jack Dover crossed the stripe sixth, while Jason Johnson's run of South Dakota perfection ended with a seventh-place run after four victories in as many tries over the past two years.  Johnson also lost ten points to Wright in the $50,000 championship chase.

Berryhill was eighth, with Scott Winters racing from 16th to ninth and Jake Peters completing the top ten.

Hafertepe, Dover, Berryhill, Wright and Bruce topped heat race action for the 39-car field, with Wade Nygaard and Wayne Johnson winning the twin "B" Mains.

Rookie of the Year contender Kenneth Walker blew an engine on the final lap of his heat race and scratched for the night.  Fellow rookie Kathryne Minter used a provisional to start the main event.
